Exhaust options
« on: May 21, 2012, 04:29:51 PM »
Something funny just occurred to me.
Swapping out the stock can for an aftermarket = You are cool because now you lost 12 LBS.
Swapping out the stock can for dual aftermarket = You are even cooler cause now you added 5-10 LBS.

Don't let anyone fool you... it is almost never really about weight.  The Concours is not a track bike.  Shoot, I can gain and lose 15 pounds on my body in a year (speaking of which, I think I need to be in the loss mode again).   A 15 pound loss is less than 1.5% of typical Concours total riding weight.

It is all about looks and sometimes making more/different noise.  Very occasionally it is about performance (but only with considerable other mods, otherwise it is just posing).  Me?  I think the stock looks and sounds just fine.  I don't want any additional or different "noise"- a fast/sleek bike is a quiet one, one that doesn't annoy me or anyone else.  I am happy with the performance and don't need or want to spend lots of money on new headers, pipes, reprogramming, etc.

The "truely" silver bikes don't need all of that stuff as they are the fastest already of all of the other color C14s. Those other colors need to add those things to just catch up.  8)

Maxtog...I agree that the OEM bazooka ain't that bad looking and not worth the effort or money to replace it with something that looks like it is being held on with a radiator clamp...I guess that means that I don't really like the looks of any of the aftermarket mufflers

A 10% power gain with a full system is nothing to sneeze at, and the better looks and sound is nice too IMO...  8)

Maybe 10% with reprogramming and other mods (like pipe).  Slapping a replacement muffler on a bike, alone, will do pretty much nothing for performance.   I suspect most of any power gain would have a lot more to do with the reprogramming and little to do with the muffler.

And really, after many hundreds of dollars of mods, is 10% even really noticeable to most riders?  I am not sure it would be to me.  I have nothing against performance, but 10% one way or the other doesn't open my wallet.  Would much rather spend that money on convenience and safety mods, myself.

As for better looks- that is in the eye of the beholder.  I still think the stock looks fine, and even better than some of the replacements I have seen.   I think it is perfectly fine if a bike owner hates or dislikes the way the stock muffler works and replaces it with something more attractive to him.  But I dare say that MOST people replace the muffler not because they think it looks bad, but because they think OTHER people might think it looks bad, or because it doesn't APPEAR to meet expectations for something that has perfectly fine performance.

And "better sound"- well, I addressed that already:  To me, any increase of sound pressure in any frequency is not better, it is worse.  Trading some frequencies for others- that is just "different" to me, not not "better".

Betting you would not hear my Area P while you were riding, it's barely "louder" than the cannon at cruising speeds. It was designed to be that way, hence why it is such a popular choice for many of us that are for sure not posers or looking for attention. I know that my bike runs cooler without that big ole nuisance and heavy thick mid pipe.

Trust me Spock, a 10% gain is huge and definately noticable...  ::)

I wouldn't expect you to get it though Max, I agree in your case you should just stick to putting your $ into more chrome for your Connie... No show and no go for you bro...  ;)

When I first bought this bike,  I said I'm going to keep the exhaust stock so I can rev it up and not cause attention  ( COPS)
Then I went riding with my sport bike friends with my bags off  ::)
I just had to make a change
Used ZX header $50.00  removed cats , used 2 Bros ZX mufflers $150,  Power tips smallest size $65.
Looks better more power and quiet. ;)
Yes you can have it all.
