Hi Low beams reversed
« on: April 26, 2012, 01:13:27 PM »
Installed Murph's headlight harness and finally got my connie out on the road only to discover the beam switching is reversed. The original headlight harness/socket was badly melted so I wired in a bakelite replacement as my intention was to upgrade to the 80/100 watt, this was before I read about and ordered the upgraded headlight wiring harness from Murph.
Now here's what I don't get. I open up the connections and reversed the hi and low. Now the headlight just appears to stay on high, WTF. I double checked the Kawi wiring schematic to confirm hi, low and ground. Can anyone tell me what the red heat shrinked relay connection is on the Murph harness. Don't want to let the smoke out.

With the Murph Kit - did you remove the "reserve lighting module" from the circuit? (last page of the instructions)  (DAMHIK)

As I am not an electrical person, I can only guess.
My guess is; you have a hot wire (Low beam) hooked to the ground pin, and a ground wire hooked the the low beam pin.....

Good luck!

Tested the stock wiring leads ground, hi and lo all test good and switch properly as controlled by the hi/lo thumb switch. When plugged into the harness same results as previously posted, well gawl darnit. Stumped for the time being. Probably email Murph's for answers.

Tis my understanding the wire with the red heat-shrink is the trigger lead for the high beam, the plain black wire is trigger for the low beam, and the white wire is a common ground (to the relays).

If it basically works, but high and low are switched, flip-flop the two small black wires (one has the red heat shrink) from the Murphs harness in the OEM socket.

If you have time, ground the white lead of the Murphs harness to someplace on the frame. Then insert one of the black leads into one of the three tabs in OEM socket until one light (hi or low) works as expected. Insert the other black lead into one of the remaining two until it also works as expected. Now remove the white wire from ground and plug it into the remaining tab in the OEM socket. Go ride.

MOB - thanks - mine is a '92 - all the instructions state is "on early years"- so not sure where that line was drawn.
