Military member deployment custody question
« on: April 02, 2012, 08:33:56 AM »
My wife is an EMS instructor and is giving a lecture on pediatrics, kids, and wants to know what the term is called when a person in the military is deployed and the mother or father is not available to care for  the child. What is that called when they leave custody to another family member, what is the form called, numbered? What if no family member is available? God-children, family friends, foster care within the military community, unit members families?

I believe the term you are looking for is "In loco parentis''.  This is completed in the Army with the use of a special power of attorney.  I have never had a hand in the process of a situation like this so my adivice could be flawed since I am just a step above a grunt.  For more info you could contact a JAG office to see what they have to say about it.

Wow, thanks guys, that REALLY helped. She's going to do some reasearch, certainly online, and we have Coast Guard and Army installations nearby, and use this stuff in her lecture. Thanks again.

For single military members, or miltary married to military, the Family Care Plan (I think that is a universal term across the branches) is mandatory. Can't have any excuses for not being deployable (if we wanted you to have a family, we'd issue you one)

I have seen instances where it was also used for military member and non military spouse, but most times, the member did not want that much "control" exerted by the service.
So they would do a Special Power of Attorney instead.

Thats kind of along the lines I figured Grinch. That helps too, thanks so much, I'll pass it along to her. She's already doing her research, she's a lot more organized than me!
