grrr 09 battery took a dump
« on: March 11, 2012, 06:54:07 AM »
well, at least its early in the season and happened in the garage. rode tuesday seemed fine, yesterday i got no good cranking, just a grunt or two. the bike is an 09, bought in 10. battery on a battery tender jr (old one??) . Does this seem strange or s*** happens?? i was able to purchase an extreme x2 from batteries plus and still go on my ride so not all lost. (hope thats a good one)  http://www.batteriesplus.com/t-motorcycle-batteries.aspx

Question, when tested it was say at 12.55v but the ca was like 70 or so, so is my bt JR not doing a good job and need replacement??  new battery is like 210 or so ca.

should i look at a battery tender plus or ctek or something to replace my jr ?? now in MN my garage is not heated, but insulated and doors are insulated also. Battery was never stored low or anything, i just didn't remove it from the bike. and it was always charged.

thanks for the time,
Joel

Well, it could have just been a defective battery.  Or the tender could be bad and was overcharging it.  Batteries can also fail pretty suddenly due to physical damage to the plates, causing shorts to develop.  Supposedly after really hard jarring.
Shoodaben (was Guhl) Mountain Runner ECU flash, Canyon Cages front/rear, Helibars risers, Phil's wedges, Grip Puppies, Sargent World seat-low & heated & pod, Muzzy lowering links, Soupy's stand, Nautilus air horn, Admore lightbar, Ronnie's highway pegs, front running lights, all LED, helmet locks, RAM Xgrip, Sena SMH10, Throttle Tamer, MRA X-Creen, BearingUp Shifter, PR4-GT, Scorpion EXO-T1200,etc

One or more of the battery's cells shorted. This would give voltage but no cranking amps. There is sulfation between the lead plates in the battery that after time, falls off the bottom of the plates, collecting in the bottom of the battery case. When it builds up enough to reach the bottom of the plates in that cell, it shorts that cell, taking away from the batterys cranking amp strength.  A good jolt like max mentioned could excerbate the problem... But all lead plate batteries will fail this way in time.
