Battery Tender for New Battery?
« on: February 06, 2012, 08:12:56 AM »
I had to replace my battery this past December and was wondering what the thoughts are about putting it on a battery tender during the winter.  Given the temps this winter on the east coast, I have been able to ride for a few hours about about every two weeks.  The bike starts right up now but if it sits for the next month or so, should I put it on a tender?  I don't want to damage a new battery...

Battery Tender brand chargers, at least the one I have, are supposed to automatically quit charging when the battery is charged.   Even so, I still generally unhook it after 24 hours if it shows charged battery.    If not riding the bike I'll hook the charger up monthly.

I work a 28/14 day sch so I'm gone 240 plus days a year to which my bikes are plugged into a Battery Tender before I leave and not unplugged until I have time to ride. I see no harm in properly sized chargers; some of our small (big to you) diesels aboard ship are charged 24/7....

I ride every day, hook up every night. Have not bought a battery since I started this. Does it help? I don't know. Am I going to continue doing what I do? Yes I am.

This is what you need and it is good for AGM battery's as well.  HTH JD   http://www.walmart.com/ip/Schumacher-SpeedCharge-Battery-Maintainer-and-Charger/13005742

ditto, since joining the carpool, I almost ride daily, but the every time the bike is parked it's plugged in.

A battery can lose up to a volt and a half a week depending on conditions

Both my Connie and my Wee Strom have Yuasa AGM batteries and I swap my Battery Tender back and forth about once a week or so, both bikes live outside in the carport.  Works great, always charged and ready to go.

Wow! I thought I was doing well with my original battery in a 06 C10. I hook it up also between riding periods and add distilled water at least twice yearly. Mark

The 1-5 from WalMart is the one I use. $21. It comes with ring type connectors and alligator clamp style if it's like the two I have. I leave the connectors on the battery and hang the pigtail out the side. Pull in the garage, hook up, plug in, walk away. I liked it on the bike so I bought one for the lawnmower. Cheaper than a battery.
