New Michelin Commander II Rear Radial Tire In Our Size!
« on: January 01, 2012, 08:31:12 PM »
http://www.ronayers.com/ProductDetails/N/2108/SKU/1731664

The Michelin Commander II creates a new standard with regard to durability, yet without making any compromises in terms of wet weather grip, maneuverability or stability. This performance balance provides yet another eloquent illustration of Michelin’s research and development philosophy: no performance gain to be achieved on one front to the detriment of another.

In response to the major problem faced by custom motorcycle riders – tire life, notably at the rear –, the engineers at the Michelin Technology Center at Ladoux, near Clermont-Ferrand (France), have developed a new rubber compound. The carcass of this new radial tire is associated with Silica Rain Technology (SRT) which integrates silica into the compound of the tire tread, while the Michelin Commander II's tread pattern has been designed to prevent all forms of uneven wear.

The exclusive architecture of the Michelin Commander II brings both maneuverability and stability. The tire’s more rigid, high-density carcass improves maneuverability, while the aramid fiber crown ply of the rear tire enhances resistance and lightness for impeccable stability, even at high speeds.

The press release:

http://www.michelin.com/corporate/EN/news/products/article?articleID=N20110823_cp_commanderII_EN

September 2011 will see Michelin launch a new motorcycle tire which delivers unrivalled tire life. Independent tests carried out in the United States using a Harley-Davidson® Electra Glide® Classic prove it: a rear MICHELIN Commander II is capable of covering up to 40,000 kilometres*. That’s nearly twice the distance covered by its direct competitors, while the longevity of the front tire is even greater. The MICHELIN Commander II creates a new standard with regard to durability, yet without making any compromises in terms of wet weather grip, manoeuvrability or stability. This performance balance provides yet another eloquent illustration of Michelin’s research and development philosophy: no performance gain to be achieved on one front to the detriment of another.

The tire’s more rigid, high-density carcass improves manoeuvrability, while the aramid fibre crown ply of the rear tire enhances resistance and lightness for impeccable stability, even at high speeds.

Last but not least, the numerous longitudinal grooves of the new tire's tread pattern optimise water dispersal for outstanding wet weather grip.

Thirteen sizes will be available from September 2011, while two other sizes will be released at the beginning of next year.

Comparison based on results of the MICHELIN Commander II versus the METZELER ME880 and the DUNLOP D407/D408 in sizes 130/80 B 17 (front) and 180/65 B 16 (rear). Individual results may vary depending on motorcycle type and running conditions.

Sounds promising; too bad they don't make the size needed for the front...

Just pair that puppy up with a 110/80 PR3, could be a good combo.

Revzilla has the rear Commander II for about $160.

Edit to add a not useless 0

I got a little over 16k on my rear Commander I (Vulcan 1500) and was very disappointed when I couldn't replace them.  I tend to be more on the tour side of sports touring, so I hope they release the front tire before I need to replace the Battleaxes.

I put a Commander on this winter. I am looking forward to trying it out in just several weeks now.
I wonder if the main difference is that the II is radial and mine is belted.
I have the same combo that George has above.

Upon further reading about the Commander II, I think the 'R' in 150/80-16R stands for 'rear', not 'radial'. Drat.

George the way you have the size written is the industry standard for a radial tire construction. In my experience the the position reference whether it is front. rear, or in the case of cars LF, RF, RR, LR is not in the DOT tire code.

So from the chart most of the sizes are Belted Bias with the B meaning Belt in this case, note the one size that has no B so it is a non belted bias tire. The others are Radials.

I referred to these as DOT codes but they are not. There is a manufactures association but tire producers tend to have some of there own ideas on tire sizing and descriptions.

Too bad there isn't a radial in the C 10 size.

They did not put the "B" after the aspect ratio/before the rim size, quick look, I thought the R on the end was radial. Revzilla lists the front and rear separately, I only looked at the the rear.

I just installed a new Venom in the back, so I'm a ways out for needing a new one.

Yeah...I see they put the "R" in there for the Radials (both of them)...guess I'm just used to a tire like this being Belted...a letter between the aspect ratio and the rim diameter (like Michelin has listed) would help...

My Shinko radial rear tire has 9k on it...so, I might try this rear tire...matched to a 110/80V18 Pilot Activ...next...or...I might go with the new Shinko radial rear, and a PR3 in the front...just can't decide...
