I have previously had sportbikes and my wife rode so seldom that I never made any changes to the suspension on the bike.

Now that I have a C-14 that I am getting set-up for her as well as me, she will/is riding more with me, but I still have not done any changes for our rides together vs me riding on my own even though I know I should make changes.

Does anyone have a basic tutorial on what changes need to be made before going on a 2-up ride?

I like more preload on the rear shock with a passenger on board.  With a small passenger, I'll usually run six clicks out from bottomed on the preload adjustor.  Rebound on the shock is also turned in quite a ways. I'm currently running it 1/2 turn from bottomed.  As far as forks go, I did add 15cc of oil to each fork leg on my 2008.   You probably dont need to do this on a newer machine.  If you set the rear preload correctly, for weight conditions, the steering geometry stays similar to an unloaded bike, and thats good for handling.

The c14 will handle a passenger, and loaded bags for that matter, without trying   hard. Many bikes lose the "fun" factor when carrying a passenger. Not this one.  The only sketchy passenger I've carried outweighed me by....a lot.  Lets be honest here, this lady could have beat up Rosie O'Donnell.  I weight 180 and this lady was at least 80lbs over that.  The bike did well, but stopping was not much fun.

A back-rest is nice for the a pssenger. They'll feel more secure and are less apt to do stupid things, like put their feet down, when they feel ok.  The only other mod that helped the bike was butterfly removal and a Powercommander V. These mods gave the bike a lot more low end and make pulling away from stops very easy.  You dont have to do this, but its very nice.

How fast do you ride two up?  If you just ride around 2 up, I wouldn't change anything except for maybe more preload on long trips. You might need to add more rebound too.

Mine's set up for me solo.  I pretty much putt around with my wife on the back.  I really can't tell a difference in handling with her (105 lbs) and luggage.

Sad really, she's a great passenger, I could ride my normal pace with her if she'd just stop screaming in the intercomm :)

LOL that reminds me of the first time my wife rode on mine....when I went WOT through the gears the screaming started when I hit third gear and the thumping on my back started about fifth gear. She loves it though.

Depending on weight, definitely preload adjustment, a backrest is always great so you can snap it when needed with out the drama ;D I also set the KACT to maximum. All my exes used to fall asleep so I never knew that they were there, except on the PCH, she would lean past me to see what was coming up.....not good...when trying to maintain a line. But as others have said an excellent bike for two up no matter the speed.

Cheers

When she is with me, it's mostly a more relaxed pace as I don't want to scare her or take the chance of doing something stupid that I could have avoided at a slower pace. She is a great passenger as she knows not to lean opposite of me, she doesn't panic and she just goes with the bike.

She is not a featherweight 105lbs, but she isn't much heavier than that so I don't notice it much except for slowing down as it does take a little longer.

I do have a backrest that I can use if the Shad is not on there and when it is, the backrest is built into the Shad, so that does help her feel more comfortable.

I will get out the manual and take a look at the preload and rebound adjustments as I have not messed with any of that stuff so far.

The manual is pretty vague. Check this out on how to set up your suspension:

http://www.gostar-racing.com/information/motorcycle_suspension_set-up.htm

Set your preload first, then work on rebound.  For rebound, you don't want the bike to feel floaty or bounce up and down too much after you've hit a bump. For me, keep it as soft as you can.  A harsh ride isn't good either.  Make small changes at a time.  You can get the settings way off and it will start to turn like a truck.

Best to make your changes, then run down your favorite road until you get where you want.

The problem with using someone else’s settings is that they don't ride exactly the same as you

Hey Scott,
I weigh a buck sixty and my wife is about a buck fifteen, here's what I run for settings...

just me without bags loaded = 5 clicks from soft

me and mama = add 15 clicks from soft (20 clicks total)

with bags and trunk loaded = add 5 more clicks from soft in addition to the above wether solo or with mama (10 solo, 25 with mama)

Oh, and a backrest for her is a must IMO, she won't ride with me without it...

Thanks jayke and ZG. I will have to play with the settings. Problem is, around me there are no good roads. I have to go while to get those as I am in the middle of the Central Valley in California. But, once I am there, I have lots of roads to ride!

No good roads? You are super close to 120, Mines Road, and others North of 580. DM me and we'll connect for some of them!

When I said that, I was meaning that I have to ride 30-45 minutes to get to any good roads. Once there, I have plenty to choose from. Mines/Del Puerto, the easy riding highway 160 along the Sac River, Morgan Territory, Marsh Creek, a little further and any of the mountain passes (they were all open until Wednesday that I know about).

Where are you located? I am in Manteca.
