Fire Hose Jeans

So.. I keep getting this catalogue in the mail from a place called Duluth Trading Co.  , and thay sell these pants they call Firehose jeans. Supposedly made from the canvas used to wrap firehoses-pretty tough stuff , one would imagine.

So I'm thinking -good riding pants -right?  Pretty pricey,but a lot cheaper than the denim/ kevlar lined ones ( of which I have a pair.)

Anybody tried these , or know anything about 'em ?

I don't think they would be as good as a proper pair of riding pants, but they can't be worse than jeans. I wouldn't expect them to do as well as a kevlar lined pair of jeans.

I've got several pair. They're comfortable on the bike & i'd say they would hold up better than jeans but not as protective as reinforced jeans or riding pants. These would be great if you could get them reinforced with kevlar or leather. The fabric appears to be much stronger than regular denim yet has a slightly more open weave (than denim) allowing more air to flow thru them. If you wore these over armour for the knees & hips/tailbone I'd say you'd be fairly well covered.

Slightly off topic...

A while back I bought a dog toy made from fire hose material for my Weiner (mini Dachshund) that claimed to be indestructible.

It wasn't.  lol

It did last longer than her normal toys though. 15 mins as opposed to 10.

I've never seen an indestructable dog toy that couldn't be handled by a determined dog. My German Shepherd can kill an indestructable frisbee in about 3 tosses. My Great Dane chewed the top off of one of those black Kong toys that are supposed to be bullet proof.

That's been my impression of that material. I think it'll last a bit longer but not much. Certainly not as long as a good pair of textile or leather riding pants.

I've used them for work all the time when I did construction. They are good pants if anything just because of all the pockets and such. Depending which ones the pockets are about twice as deep as a set of 501's or something with additional pockets in  the pockets. I just picked up 2 pairs this week. The cargo pants are double material at the knees which is nice. the extra material in the nether region makes them a lot more comfortable on a bike versus regular jeans which bunch up there. I like them.
