e-ink reader for the tool box
« on: November 25, 2011, 09:07:00 AM »
I was thinking of getting an e-ink reader to keep in my tool box with all of my electronic service manuals on it.  I had it narrowed down to the Nook Touch.  I like it's rubberized coating, touch screen so few buttons in which to get grime trapped, obvious advantages of e-ink (easy to read, long battery life).  I've been poking around about it however, and these 6" eink readers get really bad marks for pdf files.  I hear the Nook can be rooted and I'm not shy about doing that.  Doing so gives more options as far as which app you can use to read the pdfs.  What I'm most worried about is how will these things work when I need to zoom in on an image or diagram.  Does anyone have any experience in this regard they'd like to share?

I've already read where a 10 inch screen or so is better for reading pdfs.  Well, duh.  That's really not an option.  Got anything else?  Would the Kindle be much better for this, or even the Sony?

The Kindle Fire and Dlx natively support PDF files, the el-cheapo model doesn't.

Looks like the Nook supports PDF as well...

I think this may help you decide on the direction to go for an ereader for PDF files, maybe...

I use the Ipad to watch how-to vids and read service manuals while working on bike or truck...but I don't leave it in my toolbox.  I've got a lil stand for the pad, which I just perch on a ladder next to whatever work i'm doing.  They've got some pretty rugged cases from otterbox as well for protection.  You can root (jailbreak) the ipad as well.  Whats super neat is while I'm working, I can also send emails or post to say this forum or my truck forum, take pics and send...hell even start a "telemedicine" session for something I wanna show someone using video.  Just my two cents though...I know it doesn't meet one of your requirements for a leave-in-tool-box device.

How well does the touch screen deal with solvents and such?

I'm thinking you might need to touch it with dirty hands every once in awhile...

Wipe a finger or two dry. Works for me. Grime I don't worry about and touch away. Moist cloth when I'm done and she's ready for civil use again.

It is my intention that whatever I end up with will indeed live in the tool box  It'll get greasy and I don't want to bring that in.  I'm not going to spend ipad money on it either; not that I don't appreciate your perspective.  It's just not for me.  Plus I don't do all my wrenching inside a shop. I need something I can read easily outdoors.  Maybe I'm working on something and I want to glance over at a diagram.  I don't want to have to wake the thing up to do that either as my hands may be full at the moment.  Still glad to hear any and all input however.

If you're gonna use one of these, a can of clorox wipes would probably be a good thing to have around too.

How about the Sony PRS-350? I have it for general reading and it is great. It is a touch screen as well. They have larger ones too. Their touch screen is very good.

I use it too! Good one. The zoom is awesome. Plus whatever docs I put on my iPhone pop up on my iPad. I've owned nooks, kindles, kobos...all roads keep leading me back to Apple (operative word "me", sure others have different experiences).
