New PR3's, Murphs, & TPS
« on: November 06, 2011, 03:31:12 AM »
My new Pilot Road 3's should be here tomorrow and my 90 degree valve stems arrived from Murph yesterday (I am amazed again at how FAST his stuff arrives). I am thinking that I may have my guy pull both tires and let me take the TPS's home and do a battery swap while they are out and take them back to him the next morning to mount and balance. I only say that because it is an 09 and I know that I am going to get the warning sooner or later. Can I get the batteries locally and solder tabs on myself? What do I use for tab material? Or do I just remove the ones from the other batteries?

I also own a 09 ABS 14...and yes I've had my TPS's replaced because I ride in the winter and the first winter they started giving warnings as soon as the temps dropped into the 30's.  I am a bit confused but I can also understand why you sound like you are going to take care of the TPS issue yourself, but be warned.
For me, I took my bike to the original dealer in Oklahoma where I purchased it when the sensors first started giving me a warnings.  He gave me some double talk saying just live with it, etc., till I replaced the OEM tires, which I didn't like much at the time but lived with it.  Well not even a week later the OEM Bridgestones failed bigtime (rear belts exposed on my tire) when I was 70 miles from home and I got my connie to a dealer in Wichita for a set of tires.  When this dealer saw the TPS situation he ordered the new ones without even talking to me until I came in to pick up my connie the next day.  Replacement was totally free under warranty and there was another problem that came up after the new TPS's were installed...getting the bike CPU to register the new TPS's so they'd work.  I'm glad this dealer was taking care of it...it took him many phone calls to Kawasaki to finally get the system working correctly.  Needless to say, I will drive to see him with my connie rather than the original dealer I was seeing in Oklahoma when I need work done.
Additionally, it was my understanding that the entire TPS units had to be replaced rather than just the batteries.  In my case anyway the entire TPS unit was replaced in both tires.  At any rate if you are doing this yourself I hope you don't have the 'registration issue' or any other complications.  Personally since your Connie is under warranty I'd let the dealer earn his keep...but that is up to you. Good luck.

It is my understanding Murph has a TPS battery service. But like most of the time I read this on the internet.

There are some members on the COG forum who are playing with the TPS  batteries and looking forways to install them neatly. A couple of brave souls are cutting the covers off to get to the battery. YEE HA!  Someday The TPS won't be a warrenty item and we will know what to do to fix it without spending the big bucks.

This is what I like about being part of this bike and it's riders. I will know how to fix a problem before I have it.  :o

I don't always ride a street bike. But when I do, it's a Concours. Ride safely my friend.

  • It's only really cold if you fall down in it.
    • C-14 farkles you almost cannot ride without.

There is no need to cut anything to open any of the three variations of the C-14's TPS sensors. There is one screw that has to be removed and the cover pops off, then the internals literally fall out of the plastic case.

Murph did say he was offering the battery replacement service quite some time ago- I assume he is still offering that service.

The TPS sensor looks like this when it is taken apart:

What are you guys doing to your bikes?  ::)

I bought Vivian brand new on 5 August 2007.
Now she has 47,000 miles on her and still has the original TPS batteries.

I have replaced my KiPass fob battery only once, but have had to replace the clutch plates due to a disintegrated friction plate.

To be fair I probably caused the clutch problem as I have a bad habit of pulling in the clutch and revving the motor (to alert sleeping drivers that a bike is COMING THRU!), while the bike is at 20-30Mph in 2nd or 3rd gear. This is most likely what broke the clutch.

In 3 weeks I will be changing jobs so no more long commute.
The new commute will be 14 miles of empty back roads and twisties.  ;D 8) 8)

My 09 connie has 57k and I've had 6 tps replaced under warranty.the last set had a different part number, and so far have lasted over 20k.Guess i'm just unlucky,as per the dealer.but lucky the warranty covered them all. :-\

That is a LOT of sensors to have gone through on an '09. In comparison, I am on my second set of sensors, front and rear, because of the low temperature 'low battery' warning (but the sensors both continued to work) at 75K miles on an '08 that was actually purchased in July of '07. Have your sensors failed outright or have you had the ‘low battery’ syndrome (or some of each)?

Maybe you look at your tire pressure a lot more than I do.... (joke: that makes no difference)  ;D

I used to get the low battery warning whenever it was cold but this spring it suddenly stopped happening and hasn't come back this fall when it got cold again.  It used to happen every time I rode when it was colder than about 50F outside.  The warning would go away after a few miles when the tire warmed up.  The bike has 32k+ miles.  Hard to know what will happen next.

Well I got the tires mounted today and other than add Murphs 90 degree valve stems, that is all I did. I decided to just leave the TPS alone til I get a warning and then let the warranty take care of it. Thanks for everyone's input. But did mention I love my PR3's and Murph's stems?
