Audiovox Cruise Control Install - A couple questions
« on: October 09, 2011, 03:50:08 PM »
Hey guys.....I'm partway through the install of an Audiovox cruise control system that I just bought from one of the guys here and had a few questions.  I've got most of the wiring done at this point and vacuum canister and lines connected....still need to improve some connections and clean some stuff up and I'm going to tackle the connection to the throttle cable tomorrow I think.

First question......I've got the system connected directly to the battery right now.  The control pad powers up and down.  I don't have an auxiliary power block so where do you guys normally connect for power so that the system only comes on when the ignition is on?

Second question....I don't think the system is working as far as pulling and holding a vacuum at this point.  I've got block off plates so I am pulling vacuum directly off of carb #4 and carb #2 supplies vacuum to the petcock with the other two carbs capped as far as the vacuum ports.  I started up the bike and turned on the cruise.  I expected it to be working to the degree that I could hold the end of the throttle linkage cable and set the cruise and maybe feel it holding it.  I was pretty much just sitting with the bike at idle while checking this so I wasn't riding.  I read that these systems should be used at over 35mph so maybe I'm just not pulling enough vacuum for it to do anything.

Third question....should the LED on the servo be on if the system is turned on?  I didn't see my LED on when the bike was running and the cruise was on.

Fourth question.....I've got the blue wire that is supposed to go to the ignition coil connected to the black wire that goes to my stick coils.  That's what I figured it should go to from the installation instructions that I have.  Does that sound right?

I guess that was a little more than a couple questions.  I couldn't really find any trouble shooting info on here by searching.  I haven't pulled out the volt-meter yet since I haven't got the complete install done yet.  I just wanted to see if there were any helpful hints out there.  I don't have any LED brakelights or anything like that that should mess up the system as far as the basic install.

Thanks,
Marlan

Update:  I did fire the bike up again and rev'd it between 2 to 3 K with the cruise control on and it does seem to be holding a vacuum now so that it should hold the throttle (if I had the connection to the throttle linkage connected).  It also seemed to release the cable whenever I hit either the front or rear brake levers so that portion of the system seems to be working as well.

I was bummed that I had to move my coolant overflow bottle from under the right side cover to behind the battery once I started the install.  I just couldn't figure a way to fit the servo and the vacuum canister anywhere other than on the right side.  Have any of you guys installed the CC components anywhere other than  this location?

Oh well...no feedback but I did complete the install today.  Getting the throttle linkage connected was a bear but I got it.  I also cleaned up a lot of the wiring and shortened leads where I could.  I got the control keypad voltage wire and backlight wire tired into the front left running lights so that the system only comes on with the ignition on.  I went ahead and used a tee to pull vacuum from both #3 and #4 carbs just to make sure that I had enough vacuum.  Everything seems to be working fine judging from the two short test rides.  I'm still not sure if I'm getting the system to cut off when I hit the brake every time.  Both front and rear brakes are working fine though so I'll check my connection at the rear brake switch if I think there's some issue.  I don't think I went back and made a good, permanent connection there anyway since I was rushing.  This system really clutters up the bike but it's really nice to have from what I can tell so far.

The farkles never end.....I've got the SPOOFAK to install now and a dual heat-troller in the mail!

Having the #3 and 4 vacuum lines Tee'd is not a good idea, the cross pulses tend to mess up carburetion. Using just one will provide all the vacuum you need.

Make absolutely sure that the cruise kicks off EVERY time you hit the brakes. Your life depends on it.

Thanks Steve.  I'll go back to pulling vacuum off of #4 only then.  One of the older sets of instructions that I had indicated that vacuum from just a single carb might not be sufficient.  My ride time has been limited since I completed the install and now we're supposed to get rain for the next few days.  I'll put some miles on it later this week and ensure that the system is cutting off every time I hit the brakes and also make sure it holds a steady speed for extended periods.
