Ignition pick up coil adjustment
« on: October 03, 2011, 01:28:07 PM »
While I was installing SISF's torque cams, I thought I'd check the pick up coil gap. The Kawasaki manual states 0.4mm - 0.9mm on each side. I've got about 0.2mm on one side and 1.2mm on the other - kinda lopsided and out of spec. The mounting bolts fit pretty tightly in the holes so there is no play for adjusting the gap. Should I grind the holes a little oblong to be able to adjust them? Is this even worth worrying about?

Thanks.

I had no problem adjusting the gap on my 87.  Did it once and thought I had fixed a misfire problem.  Did it again 8 months later when I installed new pickups (found out the oem pickups had a loose wire on the backside).  Just had to use a thinwall socket to reach the bolt heads.

So it's been like that for 11 years.  Probably not too critical. I've never looked at mine.

+1.  I've seen my pickup coils once, when I took the cap off to rotate the engine for a valve adjust.  Now I just bump it with the starter, so I don't expect to ever see them again.
