steering bearing
« on: May 26, 2011, 06:29:36 AM »
First off, I searched in google and found the cached info i needed. Ever since i put an Avon Storm 2 ultra in the front around 45 mph on deceleration I had a little bit of shake in the handle bars. Anyway i searched for this and found that the most likely culprit was the steering head bearing not being tight enough. so yesterday I tightened the adjusting nut about 1/8 turn or so. took it for a spin and the shake disappeared! So just wanted to say thanks, and was also wondering if there is a better tool than a screwdriver and hammer to tighten / remove the nut? Thinking about taking it apart to grease the bearing maybe next winter, there looked to be an ample amount of what looked like grease, it was greenish?

Anyway, thanks for the help in advance, and now looking forward to the trip i have planned for this memorial day weekend with no shake in the handlebars!

Spanner wrench from McMaster-Carr

Click on above link, choose Spanner Wrenches, the style you want is about 2/3 down the page:   (E) Hook Style, Fixed for Slots on the Side   (Part # 6975A16 , 40mm to 42mm)

If you have a bike that has a shock spring adjustment tool it is the exact same thing. If you have one, see if it fits before you buy another tool.

+1.  The shock adjustment tool for my '79 Honda CX500 fits perfectly.  There's very little difference in the shocks among brands -- Kaw, Suz, Yama... even Harley.

If you don't have another bike... this is a perfect excuse to get one!  8)

That's because Harley shocks are made by Showa.

I have one of these shock adjustment "C" wrenches but have a question: how does one exactly get leverage on one of these things? I tried to adjust my new Progressive shock with this, using a 1/2" socket lever, but just couldn't get it to move the lockrings.

Am I doing something wrong with this? I'd like to be able to use it to adjust my own steering head bearings.
