Bought the Sena SMH10 for only $270
« on: July 29, 2011, 03:11:00 PM »
I just bought the Sena SMH 10 two pack on ebay for $270 shipped.  I am stoked, now I can communicate with my buddy for our trip to DC.  They were asking $300, I made an offer and it was accepted.  Now I just need to figure out how to use this high tech thingamobobber before my trip.  Anyone have suggestions for me that will make this as easy as possible.  I am kind of a MC communications noob, so I might have a steeper learning curve than most of you guys.  Also is there a wall plug to charge this device?  Thanks for any help.

Download the manual and it provides links to several videos that'll make the connection process easy. You'll love it.

Let us know what you think of it.
I was intending to purchase a unit. Might opt for this one.

I wonder if these are the new version or the older version.  The dual set includes everything you will need to charge them and use them.

Even the older version is great, actually the new version, which is firmware upgradable, is having problems with connecting with Zumo GPS and some cell phones and problems with the earbud baseplate connecting with these units.

I had the older and have upgraded to the "b" version.  It cost about $100 to upgrade even if you just bought the older version.

Yes, there is a wall plug to charge them.  With the new unit it is a usb mini cord with a wall charger.

The older unit has a wall charger with a round end that plugs into the unit

I downloaded the user manual so I have some reading to do this weekend.  I kind of doubt that they are the upgraded version since I got em for $270 with an MSRP of $400.  It would be nice if they are the new version, I read some of the comments on that thread and most of them sounded positive (besides what you mentioned COGnosticat0r)

Thanks for the info.

In my previous note, I forgot to mention that I've been considering the Scala Unit.
Like Jeremy I'm somewhat impaired on my knowledge on the Com systems.

Was looking at the Scala G4 (I think) on Ebay for Approx $379.) But wonder if the less expensive Q2 is sufficient at about $279?
Hard to determine which Sena unit is comparible with which Scala,, and which is best. Sena or Scala???

Arghh;;; to much info for my little bitty brain!!

I did quite a bit of research on the Sena and the Scala G4.  I found that the G4 had some mixed reviews about ease of use and bluetooth pairing.  The Sena on the other hand had nearly zero negative feedback to be found.  Of course there are small complaints here and there but nothing that I found to be big deal.  The biggest thing that I like about the Sena is the big jog wheel that got rave reviews from a lot of people for being able to use it with gloves on to change volume or whatever else they were doing.  I think I made the right choice, now I will hopefully confirm that when it gets here next week.  I will be using it as soon as it comes in since I commute to work on my bike every day.

I did quite a bit of research on the Sena and the Scala G4.

I had the Q2 and they were ok but not stereo

I went with the G4 and they were a PITA to operate, the range was great with the antennae flipped up.

I find the Sena to be easy to operate, good enough range for me and the wife or my riding buddy to be able to talk.

Having used all three, I would buy the Sena over the other two

I have the SENA and think it is great.  I am wondering though, how are folks dealing with the wind noise when using two units.  It is on all the time, and although the communication is clear, I would like to have them shut down once in a while.  I had an Autocom with the PTT, as that was a problem with the vox in high wind.
There is probably an easy solution that is in the manual that I missed.  When I was growing up, my Dad used to tell me, "Son, get away from that wheelbarrow, you don't know nuthin bout machinery!"

It is supposed to shut down while on VOX after 20 seconds of silence.  Maybe your boom mics could use some re-positioning since they are picking up wind noise.  Of course I could be way off, since the only knowledge I have is from reading the installation manual last night.

Is this setup for stereo sound all the time or are there certain times that it will run mono?

I've never used VOX on mine.  Although I have connected and ride with he mic open all day.  Wind noise is only there if you have a windy helmet or poor mike placement.  While I can't use my phone with the new B version I'm resigned that I just need a newer phone.

Oh, $249.99 for the dual set from another sites vender.  ;D

Here is some info for others interested in upgrading their old set.

I purchased them and got the newer set that will allow firmware updates.  I really like them.  Here is a link for the newer setup and a discount for forum members.

I got the Sena and pairing it with my HTC Incredible was pretty easy but I had to pair it three times using different methods each time to get the full monte. The first pairing was just for phone, the second was for stereo audio and the third was for phone with stereo audio. Turns out, if you simply do the second and third method, it works just fine. It may actually work fine using just the third method (hold down the phone button for 5 seconds and within 2 seconds of the flashing red/blue light, hit the phone button again and then pair it to the phone.

We are having an issue with my wife's Sena not going back to the music after using the intercom or phone, but I am going to call Sena tomorrow and see what they say about it.
