anyone using the ram mount aquabox?
« on: July 22, 2011, 06:47:40 PM »
I picked 1 up today so I don't have to worry about rain and such. I have a round plate that covers the entire knockout for the power cord so its of no use and would like to know what plates people may be using, thanks

Yes, the plate is supposed to cover the entire diameter of the mounting rings. That is what keeps the water out. You have to use the knock-out parts of the rings to thread the wire(s) into the aqua box. I used a Dremel tool with a carbide cutter on mine but you could use a round file (like those used to sharpen chain saws) or similar. You <might> be able to use a razor knife and cut into the relieved areas. Look around those rings and you will see detents where they want you to cut out the plastic and run the wire(s). Use the available slots that will face down so water cannot get into the box. Using two rings will absolutely prevent any water from getting in because the slots are not in-line and any water that gets into the first ring will hit the second and drain out. It is similar to a 'slinger' type method to prevent liquid flow (Volkswagen used to use that as a rear main seal on their air cooled engines) It is really a pretty clever design I think.

If this is not clear let me know and I can snap a photo of mine which has two wires feeding into the box.

Just don't leave any sharp edges that could cut the wires and you should be all set.

I have'nt ridden with mine yet but it looks like the plastic screen on the aquabox is going to create more glare at times. I can always throw a hand over it though to take a peek I suppose. I only got it so I can route my phone thru it if I had to make a call while riding. I did not  want to fuss with trying to pull my phone out to do it while moving and my music will be there as well

Yes, there is a certain amount of glare and the Aqua Box plastic window itself causes the GPS screen to appear dimmer than it really is. I found the GPS to be just about impossible to see in bright daylight. The system works well enough at night though.

Me too.  So I just bought a waterproof Garmin Nuvi 500 and called it good.  The aquabox now sits in my garage with other worthless crap.

Ditto, except I bought the Zumo 660 and called it great. But the Aquabox, not so much. It's with the other worthless crap.
