Thinking about getting a 17" or 19" Rifle
« on: August 01, 2011, 03:28:30 PM »
I have a cut-down Rifle with a Laminar Lip (you can see photos in my link). And it works good for short rides and what-not. I can wear a baseball cap going 70 and the hat will not blow off at all (I usually always wear a ff helmet though). But I bought a Scorpion helmet and it is much noisier than my previous one (Sheoi). I mean really noisy. The wind noise is much worse than the actual wind.
So, I am thinking of getting a higher Rifle and I would like your opinions if you feel like it.
A 17", I believe would be right at my eye level. With a 19" I would be looking through it. That seems preferable to looking right at the edge.
I am accustomed to looking over the shield.
I am 6' tall. But I think my righteous Corbin seat is lower than a stocker, but I am not really sure about that.
Can a guy get used to looking through a shield after 34 years of looking over it? Have you made a similar switch?
Thanks!

Starting off I converted to ear plugs and didn't like them. but decided to try them out for a couple of weeks anyway.

Then I rode without them. Ugh. All helmets are noisy, but my skid lid sounds like my quietest helmet now, and my quietest helmet is waaay too loud w/o earplugs.

Just a thought, worked for me.

had a 17, went to the 19, and cut it down to 18.  Nice now.  Do some polycarbonate at the glass shop (scratch resistant) for maybe 40 dollars at the 19, then cut it down if it is too high.  Can't make them taller....

Buzz, are you looking through it now at 18? How is that? Tell me how you like looking through it, if you were previously looking over it. Thanks.

I have the 17" on mine with a Corbin seat.  I'm only 5'8" and look through the screen.  I want to get a short one for the summer, too hot with out any airflow.  I never have my face shield down on the helmet (I wear sunglasses) and the wind doesn't even hit the top on my lid.

17" , I was looking over almost too much since I ride with an open face.  19" I was looking through , and 18" I look over just right for me and I can crouch behind in the rain if need be which I could not do well with the 17. .  The 17 was fine for wind etc, I just felt too exposed for road debris which can smart....  the 18  gives me nice ventilation and the "sense" of protection:).

Rick, so looking through the windshield is ok for you (besides the heat)?

Buzz, looking right at the edge isn't distracting huh?

I bought a scorpion helmet too (in my avatar pic). Found it was good only for 15-20 laps around the track with plugs.  Too heavy and noisy for the street.

I've always had shoei helmets, but honestly i'm not saitisfied with my Rf-1100. Matter of fact it is pure JUNK.  The pads always try to slip out right at the back, and the helmet is noisier than my prior RF-1000.  Had I knowm I'd have bought an RF-1000 on closeout over this helmet.

maybe i just can't be satisfied, I'm picky

With the 19, I was looking "on edge" or through but it was a struggle to see over.  With the 17, it flet like my whole face was above the windshield.  the 18 gives me ~ 2 inches overlook comfortably .  Just the angle of the rifle makes that much difference.  Get a 19 made up, try it yourself, and they are really easy to cut down to the 18 if you decide to.

I got used to looking thru the windshield. I didn't really like it but had no other choice at the time.  Now I'm looking for another shiled to cut down.  My old bike only had a small cafe style fairing so I wasn't used to sitting bebind and looking thru the shield.

Thanks Rick. I wish I could just try it before I buy one.

17" Summer, looking over
19" Fall, Winter, Early Spring, looking through, with 50% less wind and noise.
My 2 cents.
Ride safe all, and ATGATT please.

I was toying around with making one, since I had the rifle base only.
I got a pretty short one from someone else here, and it works well, but aims all the wind right at my head.  Very loud.
Anyway, wanting a taller screen I got a cheap piece of acrylic and had at it.  Its just a hair under 19" and is very quiet.  I am looking thru it.  For me, it should probably be closer to 17" with my Corbin, but it will make a nice cold weather shield.
What Ill most likely do is get a GL1200 sheild and make one from that, and add the GW vent to it.
Lots of cool air when I want it, not much when I dont sort of thing.

Its worth experimenting though, if you have the time.  You really do get a good idea of what size works good for you with not much cash outlay.  I have $16 in the big shield I have now....
Say what?
