How did you fender mount your PIAA X1100s?
« on: July 10, 2011, 07:12:06 PM »
Howdy guys,
Last year I bought the PIAA X1100 Platinum package with the mounting hardware for my Connie and mounted the lights via the fender bolts holes with the supplied hardware. It didn't take long for the fender holes to crack and bust through, I had to buy a new fender and left the lights off.
The question is how have you guys mounted yours?

Here is a pic showing the plastic busted through. Click the pic for larger view.

Thanks guys!

I have the PIAA 1100X on the front fenders of both my C-14's with NO problems...the secret.......................

USE NYLON SPACERS BETWEEN THE MOUNT BASE AND THE INSIDE OF THE FENDER BOLT RECESS HOLE!!  Go to Lowes and buy them use small hole to tightly fit the allen bolt, then make the nylon bushing 3/8  inch long....viola!

Thanks Ninja.
I can't remember if these spacers came on the factory fender or with the PIAA kit, but as I recall I had nylon spacers that kind of looked like a top hat.
The were white, flat on one side with a smaller diameter on the other, but raised. They fit into the hole in the fender like a spacer and laid flat on the outside. The mounting spacers fit flat against them and all screws were tight. I can only assume the vibrations broke the fender.

Is there any way that you can get a better picture of your install?

Thanks a bunch!

It looks like you have the same kit, but have them point down like I did. Ninja has his pointed up.
As I recall the kit was 74220.

Looking at the picture, I'm wondering about mounting them to the reflector bracket.
Would that work or is there something preventing that location, other than losing the reflector?

You are using the wrong bracket, and mounting it in the wrong location..do not use the reflectror base..it is weak and will cause the plastic to crack...

Use the larger bolt hole forward up front and get the aluminum L shaped bracket to make the mount...it is much stronger and looks better our front.
I have installed many of these in this location....no problems....

JRT my comment and advice was directed at you since you wondered why you had cracking......provided the solution to prevent further issues...get the nylon bushings use the forward mounting hole...end of your future problems.

Ninja,
Maybe I am confused; I did use the forward fender mounting hole, is this what you are talking about?
This is how they were mounted with the supplied screw and round ALU spacer.

The bracket you are using I think is to large...the smaller ones bypass the plastic where the bolt goes on to hold the fender...your brackets I think are in contact with the plastic fender and touching it and causing stress cracks to your fender plastic therein....

I think you need the brakets I have...call PIAA and get them to send you a pair free!
