Speedo cable idea

Anyone have a good reason why I should not disconnect the bottom of the speed cable, pull the old broken one out and fish the new one up in there, keeping the casing intact?

You can do that if you want and likely all will be good. But can you get all of the broke cable out? Are you ok with using a worn outer casing that is likely full of grime? All it takes is a small pair of pliers and a little blood letting and you can remove the cable from the speedo; worse case remove one of the inner black cowling parts to gain lots more room. I've got big mitts and have done it several times.

I don't have the faucet option on my bike.  Could use it in these 100 degree days.

It's not unusual for  Teleflex cables to break the inner cable due to wear or roughness on the inside of the housing.  If yours has that, then the new inner part may not last very long, and there's no way to look in there and tell.  When mine broke I installed the whole thing, and it didn't take even an hour.   Good luck.

Well it may be dumb luck, but I only changed the inner part when it broke. I now have more miles on the replacement than the original had when it broke. I think it has more to do with preventive maintenance practices. I take it out and clean and relube every other oil change, and I have switched to wheel bearing grease as the lube. I did flush the outer part and dry it before installing the new cable. 8)

Funny mine just popped and I need... to replace it here in lemon grove sd, CA...
Another reason to have  a GPS..... Worked great, also I learned to tell my speed by my rpms....

Also need to get an oil filter.......  and I will run this thread, but my friend has some 10/60 synthetic oil. I have been running motul 10/30 standard oil.

Anyone ever have a problem going from 1 type to the other???

Well I had time and fixed it the "right" way. I did have to take everything loose, did not want to but my XXL hands are not as dexterous as some!

And now that I think about it, while i have it apart, I will try tomorrow to mount those mirrors that I have been wanting to try out......

I only got 20,000 miles before the original cable broke. At that point I decided to try the high temp wheel bearing grease and accellerated schedule. I now have 39,000 on the replacement cable. Oh, and I change my oil every 5000. ;)

I have submerged the inner cable in motor oil.   Just let it drip out before reinstalling, or, use the grease idea.  Grease sounds even better.
