Take a look at the oil viscosity chart at the bottom of:

http://www.peterverdone.com/archive/lowspeed.htm

Looks like the oil you bought may be a "heavy" 5 wt and work very well with the AK-20s.

The Kawi recommended fluid (KHL15-10) is in this chart, so one can than use this chart to go lighter or heavier than the stock fluid. Anyone just try going to lighter fluid in the stock forks to improve the compliance, i.e. reduce the compression damping?

In theory that  should work as long as you don't run out of rebound damping at the same time but when I talked to the owner of GP Suspension after he had successfully revalved and re-sprung a C14, he said the the harsh ride was actually the result of the 1.2kg springs and the forks had very little compression damping.  That's when I decided to install ZX-14 forks.

jsa, did you change the zx springs?

Yes, I installed 1.0kg springs from Sonic Springs and added 8mm of internal spacer to compensate for the different spring lengths and keep the ride height consistent.

Thanks. In the past I've used pvc pipe for spacer material in damper rod forks. What did you use?

Yeah, a softer spring would help too, though I find there's more compliance over low speed bumps, when damping force is lower and seems to get stiff on higher speed or sharp edged bumps as if compression damping really ramps up with sudden fork compression. I've seen varied opinions on the compression damping of the stock forks. There could be a lot of variance among stock forks due to tolerance stack-up. Just curious if anyone's tried different weight fluid in stock forks.

Sonic Springs furnished the spacer material....it looked like pvc pipe.

sailor_chic was close to the truth when she found the dictionary entry, but she didn't quote the example of usage.

  • It's only really cold if you fall down in it.
    • C-14 farkles you almost cannot ride without.

A little OFFTOPIC: I am still running stock ZX 14 springs on a C-14 a they are definitely a bit too weak, even when the spring adjustment is all the way down. But I also found the stock C-14 springs a bit too harsh- I believe something just about in- between the two would be perfect, which is what another poster said (right around a 1.0 to 1.05 kg / mm rate).
