Messed that up didn't I . Anyway , while on recent road trip I got a  " high Temp warning" on the screen. After checking the coolant level..good , and no rad leak I noticed that the rad fans were not coming on. Before I go to the dealer I was wondering if anybody had an idea as to why they may not be working. I don't see any broken wires. Could it be the thermostat ?
Thanks

Yeap, fuse or relay. Start with the fuse, they are easier to check. Let us know what was it, it's always good to learn from other's troubles.

Mine blew a fuse. I replaced it with a higher rated fuse and was able to get through the trip, But One of the Fans was bad and eventually had to be replaced. I bought a replacement from a salvage zx14 that uses the same fan. A new concours fan is ridiculously expensive

True that brother, not to mention any oem second hand spares. The prices are ludicrous...I'm seriously going to part out my C14 when it eventually wears out, whenever that is!  ;) Checking out the local prices wanted(and in high demand), I've worked out that I'll be able to purchase a new C14 and have change after parting out my 09. Hopefully by that time Kawasaki SA will bring the green C14 into the country, for now that color option isn't available here!  :( :(

As these 8/9/10s get cheaper on the used market less experienced riders will be buying them so we should start seeing more and more getting parted out after they crash them.  8)

You'll probably have to replace the fan soon. Fuses don't blow for no reason.
For you, I hope not. ;)

Very true.  Although there have been cases of a small rock or something temporarily restricting the fan movement that causes a fuse to blow and then things return to normal, although that is exceedingly rare.  And fuses can wear out from vibration.

Generally it is not a good sign, though :(

Hi

Sometimes you can have a lazy fuse, if you have still got the old fuse have a close look at how it has failed.

1. Big gap in the element, half of it blown away, black mark inside the plastic housing - this blew due to a heavy overcurrent, it did its job.
2. Small crack in the element, or other failure anywhere but the centre - lazy fuse, repeated heating up / cooling down of the element has caused a stress crack.
3. Small crack or gap in the centre of the element - as 1. but also can be caused by the surface of the element oxidising at the point it runs the hottest, causing the failure.

When ever we get anything in the workshop (commercial catering equipment) with a blown fuse it is always studied to see how it failed.

Richard

Hey Richard , thanks. That is good stuff. The fuse had a large gap at the top. You wouldn't think by looking at it that they were ever joined. Just two metal posts up each side. No burn or black marks.
Thanks again,
tony

The black marks tend to be more visible where higher voltages are involved, 95% of what I work on is running on 240V AC, producing an arc as the fuse blows, but it does sound like your fuse did its job and blew for a reason.

I assume it was the correct value fuse fitted?
