Shim question
« on: June 11, 2015, 10:40:41 AM »
This is my first valve lash adjustment and I really didn't want to start it for fear of screwing it up.  I also didn't want to waste my money by taking it to a Stealership and having them tell me "yeah it's close enough".  Anyway I'm down to finding the shims for the final two valves, (both intake) the shim map tells me I need a (#18 or 2.175 mm) to get a final clearance of .1516 and .1643 respectively.  So far so good however, sourcing the half sized shims is impossible except for the internet and the corresponding wait during shipping.  If I use the next smaller size (#15 2.150 mm) I end up with a valve adjusted out of tolerance (loose) at .1766 and .1893 mm when the high tolerance is .17 mm and if I go thicker on the shim #20 2.20 mm I end up close to the bottom of the tolerance .1266 and.1393 respectively.  Within the tolerance of .12 mm but too darn close for my comfort and most opinions suggest going looser than tighter but IDK if going a small amount over the actual tolerance will cause issues.  Thank you for you assistance.

Here's a list of the part numbers. They only go as large as 2.450mm where the Kawasaki ones go as large as 2.750mm but you don't need any larger that 2.40mm.

When I remove the cams, I will set every single intake valve to .006 inches and every exhaust to .009 inches so that you don't have to come back and get them adjusted again for a long time, and so that your engine pulls smoothly and evenly from all 4 cylinders. I'll also tighten the exhaust header bolts and I'll make sure all your wire harnesses are properly routed back the way they came from the factory, and all your panels will be reinstalled correctly.  I take my time and don't get in a hurry, so it generally takes me about 3 full days to do. Contact me if you want to make an appointment.

When my time comes, I want to die quietly, in my sleep, just like my grandfather. Not yelling and screaming in terror like my grandfather's passengers.

An oldie but still funny, at least in the bad taste sort of way....
