my first in garage tire change 1400
« on: April 23, 2015, 08:59:18 PM »
Well I hated the tires that came on my bike for the last time. Tires have about 4,000 miles and by the date codes they are a year older than the bike.  PO put them on 09 bike and date code was early 08.  I ordered set of tires and they showed up.  I have mounted several sets on the Goldwings I have owned in the past.  But have always let dealer mess with those short side wall tires.  Well I figured when I got home from work today I would try to get one done and then the other in a day or so. Started with the rear.  Took longer to lift the bike than to pull tire from bike. I carried the tire over to my Atlas tire machine in less that 5 minutes tire mounted and headed back to bike.  WOW that was way to easy.  So now we all know something is going to go wrong. Well it was the front axle.  I did not have a 22mm anything. Did a little site search and saw the spark plug socket trick.  It worked and the front tire was just as easy as the rear.  Mounting tires on wheels I think is easier than the Goldwing. Just went on ebay and ordered the front axle tool so next time I would fight the axle.  So now tomorrow I get to ride to work on new booties. And just for information, Old front tires were Roadsmarts.  They were hard as a rock and slipped in corners pretty easy.  I ordered a set of Conti Road Attack 2 to go on bike.  They look like a nice set of tires.  Will find out if I like them pretty quick.

The thing that makes the GL1800 tires so difficult to handle is the stiffness in the sidewall.  The C14 rear is lower profile but nowhere near as stiff.  But either can be managed using a manual changer like a No-Mar.  I believe your Atlas is a powered tire changer, so that should make it super easy!

I've always found that if you can pre-heat the tires like having them sit in the sun for a couple hours on a warm day it helps a lot.

Excellent! I do my own with a NoMar machine. This bike is very easy to do. I find it faster and easier to do it myself then taking the time to take it to a dealer.
