headlight assembly
« on: April 05, 2015, 05:08:36 PM »
Deer smashed my head light.  I looked here to find a walk through of removal and re install of factory headlight assembly.   Any help is appreciated.  Seems like I need to strip the entire bike down....

You probably need to order a factory manual, since there is a lot of stuff you have to remove and mess with.  I can't recall any previous postings with a full procedure and photos and such.  Have you obtained a replacement headlight assembly yet?

Just go for it.

Take pics of your process so you can reverse it... and write down the order you remove things, for the same reason.

It's actually not too difficult to get to it, there are just a lot of things/steps to take off and put back. And, it'll help you "know" the bike. I tend to put the fasteners back in their spots after removal, so I always know where they should go. If I were doing it today, probably 30 minutes or so.

Get the manual. You'll need it more than just this time.

You can't post public links to sites that sell, distribute, give away, or display illegal copies of the service manual (or any other copyrighted material).  It is against the forum rules.

I'll be surprised if nothing else is broken. I hit a deer a couple of years back. All the bracing under the fairings was broken / bent. There was a lot to replace. Any reason you aren't going to insurance, my bill was almost $9000 Canadian to repair.

The video shows a little bit of the teardown. Not a step by step per-se, but i cover a couple hitches i encountered. The rest is removing all of the tupperware, which is reasonably self explanitory. And a royal pain.

Taking it apart is easy.  It's putting it back right where the trouble can begin.
