If it's any consolation, the guy with the Prius does swing a pretty mean sword. At least that's what she said....

Ah yes, from the modern English "tampion", meaning the plug driven into the muzzles of cannon on ships to prevent water from getting into the cannon when they were not being used. That is the nomenclature of those plugs, usually wooden, seen on all manner of guns on-board ships, right to the present day (though the new ones are steel and use seals). Oh wait, this should go in the useless information thread..... sorry.

Yep, the only thing in the way of a perfectly good landing was the pilots not being able to fly the aircraft. Sad, funny, shocking and amazing all at the same time. Mostly pathetic IMO. Not only did they not realize they were in a stall, they were keeping the nose up to QUIET THE STALL WARNING (because at something like 50 kts., the stall indicator no longer indicates because the designers KNEW that plane going that slowly would be on the ground). All they had to do was set the throttles and attitude of the plane and they could have taken a nap; that airplane, as do all commercial jets, has a standard throttle / attitude setting when all effective airspeed information is lost- something like 85% throttle and 5 degrees nose- up and the plane will fly until it literally runs out of fuel.

The majority of airliner accidents are the result of gross incompetence from everything I have been able to determine.

Sorry about rant but professional incompetence is a very particular pet peeve of mine. If someone cannot do a task, they certainly should not be paid to perform it.... repeatedly! IMO

Brian

Numerous if not a majority gear up landings in perfectly good aircraft occur with a buzzer sound and the pilot saying: "what's that noise?" Then a much louder crunch and scraping sound gives them a clue. I know of a guy who has done it twice in his Bonanza and for some unfathomable reason he is still able to get hull insurance.

Big Al (as I like to call him) once said "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

A. Einstein

Unfortunately, I continue to find evidence that he was right. Many years ago, I read a book by H.G. Wells that changed my outlooks and a lot of my views. It was 'The Outline of History' and was written from his perspective as an extremely perceptive Brit. (in my opinion) reflecting on recent history at the time he was writing the book, which was 1925. Basically he said that humans created societies to serve us and make our existence better. But that result has been so badly mangled as to result in things like WWI where we (all humans) shows just how superb we could be at slaughtering ourselves in numbers not believed possible, bankrupting most of western society, and setting back the entire species in the greater part of the western world for decades to come. And that was not even the 'big' war. :-(

I guess by comparison, having the occasional airliner auger into the ground is actually an improvement.

Sorry to wax philosophical but as I said, repeated professional incompetence is a particularly sore spot with me.

Back ONTOPIC: let's all hear more about glowing fobs....  ;D
