Getting soft
« on: January 11, 2015, 08:35:46 AM »
30 some years ago I thought nothing of riding my XS650 or my 650 Seca well over 600 miles from Ft. Campbell, Ky to my parents home in Pennsylvania and back on a 4 day weekend. 20 some years ago it was a cast iron Sportster the 500 miles from Phoenix to Albuquerque and back on a 4 day weekend. No windshield, no stereo, no cruise control. And a 2.5 gallon tank.

Now look at me. On a Concours. Saddlebags, heated grips, power windshield, Bluetooth helmet, XM radio, GPS, AND Kipass.

Am I getting soft or is it possible that I'm just a whole lot smarter?

Finances have a lot to do with it. Back in the day I rode an iron head sportster from central ILL. to the u p of Michigan in November. Had struts on because that was cool. Sold the bike and bought a bus ticket home in December.

Just adventure....
1974 rode 2 up on my pals cb350 from Ohio to Ft. lauderdale, stopping only for fuel... passenger would tie in against the sissybar, and "sleep" till the driver needed to pizz... the damned thing blew up the second day there while we were cruising for chicks.... (why, I don't know, not like we could pick them up on that heap)... sold it, bought 2 Grayhound bus tickets, and drank all the way home.... not as rightious as Easy Rider, but an adventure....

I met a guy in Sturgis 2003 who claimed he rode straight from Philadelphia to Rapid City, S.D. in 24 hours on a Sporty- not sure if I believe him, but judging that he was was still shaking a day later, maybe true.

900 miles in a day is about my limit on my C14. I've done Austin to Colorado Springs in a day and vice versa. The CC50 guys like Brian are nuts. Gotta be an exercise in pain.
