On the ZX-14 I regularly adjusted the idle. In the winter, I would bump the idle to about 1100-1200. In the summer I would lower it to around 1000.

In the winter it wanted to idle lower when cold. In the summer, that wasn't as much of a problem, and the lower idle speed also reduced the temperature of the bike some. You wouldn't think 200 RPMs would be that noticeable but it is when sitting still in traffic.

I believe that pappy is referring to the idle speed in RPM.  This is easily adjustable using the idle speed adjust, a little knob just in front of the shifter. It allows you to adjust at-will without removing any of the plastic.  :D
