Any TomTom Rider users?
« on: July 09, 2014, 10:46:30 PM »
Looking for a better alternative to the Garmin Zumo.
Not a fan of Basecamp trip planning.

Wondered if anyone has experience with the TomTom Rider, and can give their opinions?
Thanks.

You do not have to get away from Garmin to run, screaming for your life, into the woods, to escape Basecamp (just saying that shivers me timbers). You can use virtually ANY routing software to plan and use routes in virtually ANY GPS unit.

I use MS Streets and Trips to layout routes and transfer them to all of my Garmin GPSs. You can also use of the several on- line trip planners (Tyre, Honda's, Harley Davidson's, and other) to layout a route and send it to the GPS.

So I would suggest pick the GPS you want to use and then pick the planning software you want to use; they do not have to be from the same company.

Thanks, Brian.

I'm using a non-bluetooth 2 yr old Nuvi now.

Not waterproof, and I recently found out what a drag that can be.

But worse, it's set up to work great if you have a complete address to key in, but say you just want to enter a town 3 towns away from you, forget it. It says, "cannot locate."
It couldn't locate the town I was in! Ridiculous.

Question... Planning a route at home, on my Imac is one thing, but how is it for route changes on the road?

Planning or altering routes in any GPS is horrible IME. The screen and detail level is just too small and there are no useful tools. About the only thing that works is to push the "Detour" button and hope for the best :-(

My wife has a Surface Pro 2 that works very well for planning / altering routes but of course to use it we have to get off the bike, set it up, etc. Usually in a restaurant along the way.

But as far as looking for destinations 'along the way' or planning routes, I find doing those things in the GPS itself to be nearly useless. In fact, worse than useless 'cause not only do you not get what you had hoped for, the surprising results are usually worse than feared.

Very shortly there will be sunlight visible, Windows and Android based tablets out in the 7" and 10" range. I think they will make the ultimate navigation device because they will be large enough and have enough resolution to be useful in planning and detailing a route while still being (barely) small enough to mount and use on a motorcycle in real- time.

Bought the Rider2 shortly after getting Dirty Grrrl  November of 2009.

Found the Garmin cost prohibitive.   :P

With the device connected to your computer, in TomTom Home, you can operate your device and plan routes using coordinates or city centers or actual house numbers.

Find itinerary planning and go from town to town, coordinate to coordinate.

On the fly, tapping the screen as you near your destination will pop up your next stop in the itinerary, select it and keep on rolling.

Takes a little practice, like anything, to get familiar with how it works.   ;)

Happy with my TomTom.  It's basic and that is perfect!   ;D
