New C-14 related to Harley?
« on: March 23, 2014, 05:33:19 AM »
I still haven't bought a Connie yet and was at a dealership looking at a blue '13.
while checking it out, I saw a 3" diameter oil spot on the concrete floor.
Making a joking comment about it, I slid my hand under the plastic close to the shift lever.
My hand came back with oil on it!!
What the heck?? Where would this be coming from?
They have this on clearance,,,is this a problem anyone has had?

Not sure on the relation... My C14 is almost always parked next to my friend's Harley, unless I'm riding.  In storage since November.... Damn Minnesota winter....

Is this '13 a new or used one?  How many miles?  There are many C14 owners who have expierenced leaking cam sensor o-rings, and a few had leaking valve cover gaskets.  The amount of oil you mentioned sounds more of a spill than a leak to me.

New with no miles.
I guess I never noticed where the oil fill plug is.
I'm guessing it is on the shift lever side? Could oil get behind the plastic from there?
Just seemed strange for the amount of oil on the floor to be from an overfill, but I guess that could be possible. I don't want to buy something if it already has issues.

Looking at o-ring seal leaks, is this where it shows?

Thanks,
Pap

The only leaks we've seen, for the most part, are weeping valve cover gaskets and the cam sensor o-ring.  Not enough to really make a puddle in the floor.  Don't think I've ever heard of one leaking in the dealership, though.  Sounds like something in the setup wasn't checked, but if the dealer is stupid enough not to see and rectify the leak before a customer finds it I'm not sure I would buy from them.  Don't know what else they may have mucked up in the process.

Service/set up tech spill when putting oil in the bike?

The O-ring leaks don't show up for a few thousand miles usually, from what I have read.  My '12 with 5600 miles has not leaked yet.

It is highly probable that it is a setup issue by the dealer and easily corrected.  When I got my bike from the dealer, it leaked antifreeze because a hose was not quite tight, the tires were mis-inflated, and the headlights were pointed into the ground.  All seem to be common.  Other people also see the battery installed backwards, the bags installed on the wrong sides (that one is amazing).

The Concour is nothing like a Harley.  But dealers are probably similar.
Shoodaben (was Guhl) Mountain Runner ECU flash, Canyon Cages front/rear, Helibars risers, Phil's wedges, Grip Puppies, Sargent World seat-low & heated & pod, Muzzy lowering links, Soupy's stand, Nautilus air horn, Admore lightbar, Ronnie's highway pegs, front running lights, all LED, helmet locks, RAM Xgrip, Sena SMH10, Throttle Tamer, MRA X-Creen, BearingUp Shifter, PR4-GT, Scorpion EXO-T1200,etc

If I go with this one, I will surely go over it thoroughly. As much as I joke around with the Harley riders I ride with about their bikes, I can't have mine leaking!  ;)

There are vent hoses in proximity to the shift lever....could be one of those venting.....my bike does it sometimes.

I also vent, but nothing leaks out that I'm aware of.

I agree with Maxtog. Most likely a dealer prep issue easily corrected.
