Horror movie suggestions
« on: September 07, 2011, 09:16:28 AM »
Halloween night we turn out the lights, light a carved pumpkin, get a beer and some snacks, watch a "Twilight Zone" episode, then "Charlie Brown Halloween", and then watch a scary movie. Last year, we watched "Duel" with Dennis Weaver. We are looking for something this year, something from before say 1973 or so, technicolor first choice, but B&W is ok. My library has a good choice but not all titles. We've seen most all the classics, Mummy, Dracula, Wolfman, etc... Leaning towards a Vincent Price type film from the 50's, but again, something like "Village of the Damned","Psycho", "The Birds" is ok too. All suggestions considered. Thanks.

How about Gargoyles (1972)? It's kinda campy but it might fit the bill.

The Langoliers because the ending is so bad that it is horrifying.

An Inconvenient Truth. Starring Algore and a cast of thousands ( of dead polar bears and penguins).
Scarey as hell (that they even made this movie).

Any of the Dr. Phibes movies ,with Vincent Price in the title role. Kind of a campy , '60s feel to them-but still fun.

Sort of the same feel as the old British "Avengers "series ,with Patrick Mcnee and that fine chick whose name escapes me at the moment  ::) ,but her character was named  Emma Peel !

John Carpenters "The Thing". I know it's not pre 73 but pretty good remake.

+1 on Dr. Phibes! Anything with Vincent Price. If you find one with Vincent Price and Peter Lorre, double plus good.

It has to be made before 1973?

Event Horizon ('97) is a good, scary, and intelligent movie but you have to pay attention to what's going on to get the full effect.

If were talking Vincent Price then "The Pit and the Pendulum" 1961 should be on the list.

OK, good. Sorry, got to be about '73 or before, we like the old stuff, no computer graphics and idiotic camera play.

So I'm looking at:
Gargoyles- I remember this, somebody famous in it, can't remember
Dr. Phibes-good, good
Wicker Man, Don't remember this, I must be thinking of the remake from the 80's
Pit & Pendulum-Great classic

+1     I remember watching that as a kiddo when we were moving from Long Beach to Tampa... going thru the Gulf Coast right after Camille, staying at a motel in Biloxi... still raining... lightning flashing... scared the crap out of me then.

Any of the old Hammer Films... Dracula series...

The Haunting... 1963
The Sentinel... 1977, great flick!
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, the original or not.

Good luck on your hunt...

Gargoyles,Haunting, not available. Pit and Pendulum is a double feature with The Fall of the House of Usher which I've seen and is good. Wicker Man has two of my favorite Brit actors Lee and Woodward.

Try The Descent. I never heard of it before this past weekend. We watched it and it was pretty scary. It's not old (2005) but I think it may have what you're looking for. No camera tricks and it's all filmed down inside a cave and (insert creepy music) the people aren't the only things down there...    :yikes:

Nosferatu? 1922, but it does have camera tricks and special effect. First ever vampire flick. If not Halloween then watch it. Lots of firsts it that film.

Tim, I've seen Nosferatu, not sure if my wife can do a silent film, I'll see if the library has it. I've got to admit, its a creepy film, imagine what it did to folks when it came out. I'm leaning towards the Wicker Man with a back up of the House of Usher/Pit & Pendulum double feature.

If you have Netflix, they have it streaming instant. I just watched part of it the other day. I'm going to sit down and watch the whole thing. Maybe Halloween?
