Seasonable vs year round insurace coverage
« on: October 23, 2013, 01:09:52 PM »
We are loosing our battle with mother nature and winter is on it's way.  At least here in Minnesota.  This topic comes up with a few people I ride with, and owners of other seasonable recreational items.

Who cancels their coverage in the wintertime?

Personally I pay all year long, since it is covered while stored in another location.  I know the owner of the building I store it in also has coverage (since it is owned by an insurance agent I'd bet good coverage too) but I don't leave it to chance.  Also I don't have to call and re-start the coverage before I ride it home in the spring.  One last thing I wouldn't want to forget.  To each their own, but I'd rather be covered.

We are lucky enough to be able to ride year round here in the PNW.  :)

You can do a comparison of six months and year round. For motorcycles, a full year coverage is discounted because insurance companies assume you will not ride it much (or not at all) during winter. So, really, you only save maybe $50 or so. I rather have the year round option to ride and be insured for just $50 more.

I didn't even know seasonal was an option. But I ride year round so wouldn't be interested anyway. One question, can you get year round for comprehensive but seasonal for liability and collision? Seems like you would still want comprehensive to cover theft or fire or something.

I keep mine covered year round. Around here ya never know when a nice day will show up in the middle of winter.

Speaking of which. It was nice this morning on the way into work (clear but 40 degrees) but now it's snowing. It looks like I'm in for an interesting ride home.

I did that this past spring.  Got to try out the C10 in 3 inches of slush.  Not fun, but made it home with no issue.  TAKE YOUR TIME!

My insurance (AmFam) agent told me that the rates are calculated with the assumption that winter riding is less, but the coverage is year-round. Though I live near Minneapolis and work in northern Illinois - definitely northern Midwest -  if the road is not slippery, I ride, even through the winter. I try to avoid salt, obviously, but for a $5000 bike and 57 years under my belt already I'm not missing any more riding time than I absolutely have to.

This question comes up frequently here (SE MNN) about this time of year.  Corvettes, boats, campers, motorcycles.... ect. parked for the winter.  Some at the owner's facility, others use another place to store them.  The majority seem to think they save a lot of money by pulling coverage in the off season.  I don't see much savings to be had, and if something where to happen, I'd rather have double coverage than no coverage.  If my bike where in my own garage, and there was a fire- would my homeowner insurance cover it?  What about if I store it elsewhere and there is a fire, theft, or roof collapse.... Too many "what if's" for me to chance it for the little I would save.

Yeah, that's what Progressive told me on the annual MCCA charge that's now $175 PER VEHICLE in Michigan.  Totally inaccurate.

My car and truck are driven year round, my bike is not.  Yet ALL vehicles are assessed $175 per year if ANY coverage is in force, including comprehensive only to cover a bike from damage while stored.

That is NOT calculating assuming winter riding is less.

To be fair, Progressive can't do anything about it - its a state law that all insurance companies and drivers must comply with.

I pay about $440 for a 2010 and a 2011. Way to cheap to try to save a few dollars in the winter. I try to ride it at least once a week anyhow. Just to keep the fluids flowing.

1 more for seasonal. Insurance break of $180 a month means if I'm not riding it everyday, its in storage.
