Removing heating grip elements to install Heli Horizons?
« on: February 22, 2013, 02:14:59 PM »
I just got a call from the shop doing the work on my bike...they say there's no way for them to get the left side off to install the Helis without damaging the existing heating element, as it's adhered to the bar.  How did you guys handle this?  I don't want to also have to spring for a new heating element for that side.

Bummer.

Thanks for any info.

Ah, the law of unintended consequences strikes again.   I think we had someone ask something similar..  I'll have to check the archives.

You could try using this... http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_VGGR

Or just do it the old fashioned way with a long narrow screw driver and work it all around very carefully and spritz it with silicone lube every once in awhile.

I'm sure one of our 2010+ members have has gone through this.

My solution was to take the spring clip from a garage door opener, straighten it, put it over a steel bar and pound a little curve into it length wise then use it to slowly work it under and around the grip. Had no problem. You might try also spraying a little WD-40 with the tube as a glue solvent. Just take it slow and work it.
