Watch Battery Replacement
« on: September 20, 2013, 06:11:08 PM »
How many of you change your own watch batteries?

On my first electric watch it had a little slotted hatch that screwed open for easy replacement.

My 28 year old Seiko has died again and I've been paying someone else to replace the battery for longer than I can remember. I've probably paid for the watch a couple of times. I am thinking about replacing it myself.

I've also thought about throwing it in the drawer and getting another watch.

I found a stainless Timex Automatic watch. Keep moving or wind it up. under $30 5 or 6 years ago. Only wear it 2 or 3 times a year.

I'm thinking about doing it.  I can buy a watch kit that can take off the backs for about as much money as it takes to get someone to do it for me.  Watches are getting rare these days.  I have to really think about it wearing it as I have my cell phone to give me the time or the clock in the car or on the bike.

Batteries Plus has a lifetime battery program. IIRC, it was ten or twelve bucks. They put some sort of sticker in the watch at the same time. Take it to any B Plus store for free replacement when it dies.

Some jewelers will replace any watch battery for free.  Check around.  They do it hoping you'll make your next purchase there, but nothing wrong with that.

I have a 19 year old Timex Indiglo Ironman Triathlon watch that is my daily work watch.  I'm sure I've had the battery replaced several times. Good solid watch. It only loses about 2 seconds about every 6 months or so.

Guess what I was told when I contacted Casio about a replacement watch band and battery on a G Shock watch?  Band $12, Battery $8, to pressurize the watch (when they open it to replace the battery) $30.

Guess what the same watch cost new?  $60

I got a new watch a year ago. It is a Citizen Eco Quartz. It seems to do everything itself. It is solar and charges it's own battery. It sets it's own time from shortwave radio. It is made of titanium and weighs next to nothing. 30th anniversary gift from my employer. I only wear it on weekends.

I have a 9yr. old Casio with the same features ( its my daily work watch ). Guess what, they have batteries also. They don't need to be replaced as often. I guess I'll learn to change batteries like I learned to change oil.

Also true with a Citizen Eco-Drive watch. If you also get an A-T version, you never have to set it either and will always be accurate within milliseconds.

That's good.  If it happened at night we'd never know it.

Back on track...

I buy some  of the watch batteries from HF ...I have had varied success ...sometimes they work and sometimes they don't....I usually now just take my good watches up to a jeweler friend and let him do it....

I was just looking at the self winders again and the "automatic" everything watches.....just can't bring my self to spend money when I have perfectly good watches here.....

I wish they would phase out all the different size batteries (like the cell phone charger uniformity) and make all battery powered watch batteries the same size...

So my EDS's and watches would all use the same battery
