Son Crashed last night. (some blood) lesson in Gear
« on: July 11, 2013, 09:56:55 AM »
So My son got home late from work last night. He left on his Bike and came home with  Good Citizens, In a Pickup with his bike in back.
He Low sided on a 270 degree on ramp getting on the freeway. Thought He saw Animal of some kind, he isn't sure. Tapped his brake (Rear) and out he went into traffic. He wasn't hit. but He said he jumped up and all he saw was Headlights. So he ran for the grass ...
he was wearing good gloves with armor, Field Sheer Mesh jacket, Arai helmet and combat style technical boots. But his uniform work pants.
Here are some photos to remind you, you will still hurt but not as bad with the gear in the right spots.
I noticed every scuff on him was exactly where they place armor in Motorcycle gear so at least they know what they are doing.
jacket and arm and shoulder that was in it.

and the knee that had no armor

and Arai Helmet that would have been his face

And My birthday sign from my Daughter, Grandbaby, and Wiener dog all in the same photo cuz i cant resist adding a photo of the wiener.

It was also a big lesson for me. I just this week said. . . Its too damn hot to throw on these pants to go Ten miles to work.... I was shocked at the difference between Mesh motorcycle Gear contact points and basic work pants impact points. It was also a lesson in the advantage in full face helmets. SMACK right on the chin piece. On the shoulder of the jacket you cant tell hardly that it was hit. but the mesh on the inside was shredded. and ground into his shoulder. This is still a confusing point....
Oh, and spiderpig is one broken little SV650. but those sliders keep it from becoming totaled.
Just broken Peg mount and clipon bar and throttle tube and front brake lines and rashed right controls and Master cylinder. He is talking fix it. so I guess it didn't freak him out too bad

I'm really glad to hear that your son wasn't the worse for wear.

I have these signs on the front and back gates at home.   :)

From the knee and elbow marks it looks to me like the jacket was too large and the hard parts moved out of the way during the slide. The hard parts of the jacket should have protected those areas better.

I dumped a Yamaha FZ6 a few years ago on a backroad curve. Good gauntlet length gloves, good textile jacket and full faced helmet. If you've ever slid along a Texas backroad (chip and seal surface), you know how abrasive those are. Totaled the bike, ground a hole through the shoulder and elbow on the left side, and major abrasions on the helmet and glove hard points. Separated AC and a cracked rib in my back from the initial impact with the road, but not one single scuff or scratch on me.

I've got pictures of my gear somewhere, but they look similar to the ones above.

Glad he's ok!

I am glad he is ok also.
Knee had zero protection. just work pants.
and I think you are right about the ill fitting stuff. We both wear smalls. I'm 130lbs he is like 140 and buying gear is completely difficult. My Shoei helmet is an extra small. and his Arai is a Med. at least he has a fat enough head to find a helmet.  I was 180 when I bought the Concours. I have a Jacket hangin in the closet for when i get fat again.
7 years ago and about that when I got the FJR and My wife and I totally need new stuff that fits better.  Son does too. Now...

Glad to hear your son is fine for the most part.
Hope he recovers fast. What's the total damage on the bike?

Some cager pulled out in front of my co worker on the way home from work. He T-boned the car and flew over the hood.  Somehow, his R1 landed on top of his right shoulder and dislocated it and a good portion of the bike landed on his head.  Full face helmet saved his head and his Joe Rocket jacket had armor which lessened his overall injuries.

His accident made me re evaluate my PPE.  Started to wear my mesh Shift jacket full time, regardless of the distance, Sidi mesh gloves and upgraded my helmet

Well, we get more than our fair share of numpties who take advantage of the hot weather and just wear shorts and a T shirt. Mostly, it seems to be the Harley clone riders. But at 15mph you won't hurt that much.... ::)  On a more serious note - I despatched for nearly 5 years and had my share of crashes. The gear provided by the courier firm (pony express..go figure) said it was designed to slide and not bump and roll. Thats when you break bits. Even at over 30 Centigrade I still wear my kevlar jeans and leather jacket. Been there - got the T shirt etc.John
Bloody hell - its a heavy bike!

I'm glad this is a story where we can look at all of this and put a bit of humor into it all. He's hurt, he's sore, he's also alive and not in the hospital, all good things. Hug him, tell him you love him and give him a gift card for new gear. Nobody has asked Tim, how are you?

He is a type 1 diabetic. I bought him that bike. I took him to his first riding class. I taught him to pursue life. Even the dangerous parts. Scary **** every time any of my kids are late getting home. Million ways to die, live life with what you can live with. I'm good. Scared the crap out of me when I saw the hard shard sticking out of his shirt! I hope he learned a valuable rear brake lesson. And it'll take a while for him to pay for damage and buy new gear. I think he won't ride without gear ever. Also, I don't think I will either.
I think a father son set of track lessons should come out of this. Yeah?
