Got a peculiar problem....
« on: July 16, 2013, 09:40:51 PM »
My '91/'92 zg1000 is travelling without the lower fairings and belly pan right now (don't ask, long story) and is being affected by strong gusts of wind from the right side now....a strong gust from the right side will make the bike seem like the key has been turned off, no power and instant deceleration, with no spark happening until the gust eases, then we are back to running strong...it's an instant off-on with the side-wind being the factor. Gusts from the left or from ahead or behind have little or no effect other than to cause the usual "lean-in" effect that we are all used to...
Anybody got any ideas?

Loose coil connection being lifted? Sounds odd
Bloody hell - its a heavy bike!

One of the  common places is to look at the side stand switch and connectors.  That has been known to cause weird cutting out problems.

If you are loosing ignition, you should be able to similate the problem.  I would fire the bike up on the center stand and start pushing pressure on the fairing.  I would think that something is shifting around and pinching the harness somewhere or pulling on a harness connector plug.   There may be only one pin loose in any connector plug so give each wire a little tug with needle nosed pliers that you put electrical tape on the jaws to keep the teeth from scraping any insulation.

Maybe something got bent or pulled out of shape during the time the lower body work got damaged.

Good Luck

Related to Side stand switch.

In the hotter months I always run with lower halves and belly pan removed and have never had a problem with it. Sorry I can't offer any more than the others except to say that running without the fairing does not cause the problem, you'll have to look elsewhere.

I'm not familier with the c10 but could something be blocking the air intake?

Not too sure, but running it  on the center stand and shaking the fairing on the right might duplicate it. I'd check the coil wires, they have to be pretty snug. Isn't the side stand switch on the left side? He said it happens when wind hits from the right.

Don't know why the panels are off, but if it because of an accident, maybe something got tweaked, air box got broken, vacuum hoses, plug wires moving in the wind causing intermittent connection, same for coils or other wiring.?

gPink, that's what my mech thinks may be the problem, and I'm going to investigate the intake on the airbox thoroughly, as half of the intake has Steve's foam in it already, and it wouldn't take much to shut off airflow, but I'm not feeling a lessening of power, I'm feeling a complete cessation of power instantaneously, that's why my gut is yelling electrical at me....I'm going to start looking closely at the right side this weekend, might even steal the wife's hair dryer (big expensive super-duper thingy) and see if I can simulate the air gust's influence, like Leo suggests...I'm actually hoping it's just a coil connection, I believe I can handle that repair... ::) Definitely one of the weirder things I've had happen so far on the Concours...and Leo, you may be more correct than either of us know so far...it was a decidedly violent parting of ways when I lost the bottom half...something definitely could have been pulled hard enough to violate a few close connections...

Reading into "violent parting of ways" makes me think kill switch circuit perhaps?
