GPS screen replacement, anyone?
« on: May 17, 2013, 09:31:21 AM »
I have an old Garmin 2720 that needs the screen replaced. The glare coating has peeled off and the touch sensor keeps being triggered. I think this is problematic with these units.  I just cannot afford a more modern unit at this time, I am still in the process of farkling.  Has anyone replaced a screen and if so give me some tips or suggestions.  I can buy screens (digitizers) on ebay for 25 bucks.
Thanks,
Walt

I know of two riders that tried finding replacements screens, and had no luck... this went as far back as 12/2012.  One snagged a used 2720 at a good price... the other just dumped the $$$ on a used 550.

I wish you good luck!

It's pretty easy.  Just take your time when you do it.  Be sure to use a sharp knife to separate the digitizer from the LCD>

I have 2 of these GPS jewels, one of which is like new in the box. Not worth fixing IMHO, get yourself a NUVI 500/550 and be done with it.

Hey Pokey, is there an available cradle for the 500/550.  I want to use the gadget mount for my bags connection tank bag. The cradles I have seen don't seem to have a flat back that can be screwed to the flat gadget mount plate.

Check the Garmin website. They'll replace the screen for about $100.

Seems like a bit much for what is now a 30-50 dollar GPS.

Garmin doesn't offer repair services for the 2720 anymore, even out of warranty.

Walt,
I fixed my riding buddy's Zumo 550 with a new Digitizer AND LCD for about $40 from this guy who ships from MN: http://tinyurl.com/maykbww  goodsupply0889 is his ID and he ships fast!  He lists the 2720 digitizer for $27.  I even ordered a spare LCD/digitizer for my old (2002) Zumo 550 in case it ever dies.
Have some good jewelers screwdrivers on hand and take your time. It's pretty easy if you are careful.
