Murphs grip question
« on: March 13, 2012, 07:49:19 PM »
Just got my new grip heaters on and am going to install the soft grips Murph sells. I need to cut the ends off. Whats the best way to do that? Thought about hammering a piece of conduit into it to cut a hole.

I used an utility knife.  It's actually pretty easy to do.  Plus it doesn't have to be perfect since the bar end weights will hide the cut end.

There's a nice groove in the grips that is right at the spot that I found they need to be cut to avoid the bar end weights.  I just use a razor knife to cut around that groove.

It's a bit easier if you put a tube or something (broomstick, whatever) inside the grip to give yourself a surface to cut against.

Thanks guys. I was going to cut around the groove last night but didnt. I ut a 3/4 conduit in the grip and wacked it a few times with a wood backer. Cut a nice circle, but like mentioned, it doesn't show. I put a lock washer on the throttle side to get a lttle clearance.  The throttle side was a bear to get on. Thanks

You mention that the throttle side was hard to install... Could it be that you installed them on the wrong sides ?  Just a question.  Been there, done that  :-[
A little bit of hairspray and mine just slid over real easy once I caught my mistake.

I was wondering that myself. I already had the throttle one on before I got to looking if they were different. No marking and the clutch side went on a little too easy! I will leave them and see what happens.

Yup, that's what happened to me.
I switched mine back the right way cause the hairspray was still wet so it came off easily.
The inside diameter of the throttle side grip is a bit bigger than the clutch side.

Hi all,
I hope this is the right place to post/ask this:
I just replace the grips, not sure if they WERE stock as the bike is new to me, Murph's now. But, anyway I did check, and saw the two sides are different sizes before I put 'em on, so I think I got that right.
But now the throttle is sticking severely!?!

Loosen the screws that clamp the throttle side switch clam shell to the bars ans see if it will slide slightly to the right. Putting on the grip can push it to the left and cause a little binding. Also look to see if the end of the grip is not rubbing on the bar weight, might also check to see if the grip is rubbing on the clam shell.

Stick Coils & Harness and  Precision Shift Linkage packages!
^Do you still make and sell these items?^
May I please order both? Or, at least the shift linkage for now?
I can be patient if you are busy. Since I recently purchased my first zg1000 (1999) and am trying to prioritize what to do first. It's a good machine but could use some tweaking! And sat for a while so there are additional issues. Hate to buy something and immediately start throwing money at it, but I've considered a wish list of everything I would want to do, and with purchase price I'd still only be at about 3k, I can live with that to get the healthy horse I want. SO, working to make it more rideable and reliable asap without losing any more riding time than necessary. The coil job may be a bit involved for a newbie. I may save that for winter, although I do like to ride almost year round, that seems wiser, and I'm not struggling with the stock set up that bad yet. But, I thought maybe I should get my order in.
The sloppy shifting is calling for my attention, and I hope to be able diy that task somewhat quicker. Also, the pegs were an obvious problem for my knees on our first 300 mile day. I ordered the Murphs Lowerers right away, and would like to get that whole foot/peg/shift/pedal system set up.
Grip problem update: Seems so obvious now, I did not cut enough off of that grip (for one thing), better now. I panicked when it wasn't smooth right away b/c after consulting the Clymer man, I saw where it says how to do the left grip, but than basically says the right can't be done! And just leaves it at that, Lol. So I assumed I must have done something severe!
I'll PM ya abo payment and delivery. thanks again.
