Modern cars and bikes run out of gas all the time though MP...  :-\

What's "MP"?

I will also note that I have never run out of gas on any vehicle I have ever owned.   And that is at least 7 vehicles covering a span of 28 years.  (Yes, I know by saying that, I will now run out of gas on my next trip)

I bounce my range miles off of the gps distance to up-coming gas stations (POI listing) - eases the mind a bit.

The low fuel warning light came on for me today on my way home.
I had about 167 miles when I filled up. This seems low to me.
My bike only has a little over 350 miles on it, so I know I'm still in the break-in period.
(I'm riding like I'm breaking her in as well...nothing excessive)

Is this the norm for milage, or will it improve? I use the ECO mode as much as possible.

Thanks!
Steve

My low fuel warning came on 100 yards from the gas station
Filled up the tank up to the metal plate in the gas tank, while on the centerstand
Put 4.643 gallons at $4.469 (premium)= $20.75
I average 38 mpg at 80 mph (which is consistent with the flow of traffic)
38 x 4.643 = 176.434 miles

I believe I had 1.2 gallons when the low fuel warning light came on
I have driven 22 miles once the warning light came on, but a conservative 70 mph

Moral of the story "slow down, get better gas mileage and save money". Yeah right!

Well, that it is true.  It doesn't save as much as some would claim or think, but it is certainly true because air resistance goes up to the square of the speed.  But I don't care :)

Don't forget your ECO mode (if you use it is disabled at about 75 MPH. I get my best mileage at 70 MPH. So you will get worse mileage at over 75 MPH

Good to know. I wasn't aware of that, or have forgotten.   :-[

If I run out of gas, will it start up if I add more? Before some wise acre responds, I want to know if any type of bleeding has to be done to get air out of fuel lines.

I run it dry once. My nüvi pointed me to the next gas station 50 miles away... Bad planning from my side. So about half a mile before I got there there was a left handed curve. I braked getting in the curve, and when I gave gas to exit it, the engine hesitated, but it kept going. I made it to the gas station and when braking next to the pump the engine died. I tried to start it (just once, out of curiosity) and it wouldn't.
I filled the tank (6 gallons went in), hit the start button and it was on. No issues.

Education is important. Riding my bike is importanter.

I've never run any vehicle out of fuel - not cars, not motorcycles, not airplanes....

Except....

For my BMW 1200RT.  I always use the trip meter on motorcycles, but the RT has a really bad habit of displaying random things on the display when you start it up, so the trip meter wasn't displaying when I rode it that one day.  To add to bad luck, the fuel gauge managed to fail, indicating a quarter tank left.  I was tooling down the freeway and suddenly, no power.  I coasted over to the shoulder.  Quarter tank left, should be okay.  Tried to start it.  No go.  Cycled through the display button to show the trip meter.  Sure enough, 318 miles since the last fill up.  D'oh!

The bike was fairly new and under warranty, and I got a free roadside assistance package in the deal.  Woo hoo!  So I called the number.  "Your bike isn't in the system."  No match for name, for VIN, for anything.  "Okay we will send someone out.  It will cost you $40."  WTF.

Two minutes later a FSP (Freeway Service Patrol) truck stopped.  He hooked me up with a gallon of fuel, no charge.  That was nice - I was able to get the F outa there before the $40 truck showed up.

Most of the riding I do with others have bikes with significantly less range than my C14. I fill up when they do and hardly ever go below half tank. When on my own I try not to have the extremely annoying and somewhat dangerous low fuel warning come on and fill up before that happens.

Ride with the Harley boys and you will never run out of fuel because they stop twice as often as you need to!

I averaged 45 mpg with my '94 Road King and 35 with this '08 Connie.  ;)
