Steering stem bearing jam nut tool.
« on: March 18, 2013, 10:47:58 PM »
I figured since I was doing so  much other maint. on my C-14, I might as well check and adjust the preload on the steering stem bearings. The local dealer would rather I not borrow their tool (I don't blame them, honestly). Buying one would have taken too long and I'm guessing it would have been pretty pricey. I couldn't find anything in the toolbox that I could make work (without damaging anything). So, I decided to make a tool for the job. Seems like overkill for a once or twice deal, but it did  neccesary job, and it did it well. I have $13 and about a half hour invested (socket, key stock, spot welds, some grinding and filing). BTW, they were indeed loose, very loose...

Nice job!!!
We used to make those for the jam nuts on the front hubs of chevy 4x4's in the 80's.  We just used a piece of pipe of the correct size then used a pipe wrench on it... no ability to use torque wrench as yours has.  I may just copy yours.

Nice job! I thought about a large socket of the correct size and grind in the slots leaving 4 protrusions. Since I don't have a welder I thought this would be easier for me but haven't tried it yet.
