Ear buds for SENA SMH10
« on: August 14, 2013, 03:28:16 PM »
Anyone tried the clamp that allows you to hook ear buds instead of the speakers? Contemplating getting one to minimize wind noise and yet be able to hear my music, voice over intercom, etc.

I have, works great! I use in the ear canal type buds. The only problem is they get tiring on a long day. Thinking about getting some custom molded ear buds just for the motorcycle.

We actually use foam ear plugs with our Sena SMH-10.
Still has enough volume to hear each other talk or listen to music.

I use the Koss KSC75 headphones ($16 at Amazon). They pop right off the earclips. Fit very nicely in my Shoei With a little bit of foam behind them to take up the slack. Much more comfortable than ear bud style phones. They have a good amount of bass and good volume. Remember, headphones have to actually contact your outer ear to be able to provide any bass response.  If they are too far from your ear they will sound tinny. Put in just enough foam so they just graze your outer ear. Then use a small dab of silicone glue on both sides of the foam to hold them securely in place. The headphones that Sena provides are pieces of junk. The clamp that allows you to plug in your own headphones is the only way to go.

Tried the Sena smh10 with the speakers and ear plugs for me not enough volume and more wind noise than I wanted. Bought the ear bud unit and really like it lower volume for the tunes and cuts the wind noise will be keeping it this way.
it's better to ask forgiveness than permission..... So I have been told

You will love the custom molded buds. I use custom molded ear plugs and they have been Heaven sent for me. Regular foam ear plugs would leave my ears in pain and literally bleeding after days of use in trips. I can wear the molded ones all the time with no pain whatsoever. I got mine done at an audiologist as well and highly recommend that route for anyone wanting custom molded ear plugs or ear buds. I wouldn't let anyone but an audiologist do it.

My senheisser ear buds that I use all the time are a pain to put on and stay on inside the helmet. But they have the best response of all the headphones I own. So I am beginning to think unless you get a custom molded earbuds, the regular ones are out of question. I was also thinking of buying a pair of noise cancelling headsets and somehow install them inside the helmet. Might try it out with a cheap pair. If that does not work, guess a trip to audiologist. I am not sure though how a custom earbud work - do you get to pluck out the driver from an existing earbud that you like and install it in the custom mold?

The custom molding simply replaces the removable tips of your earbuds. The old tip slides off and you slip the molded one on.

I went today had ordered a set of these: http://www.westoneaudio.com/index.php/products/custom-fit/cr1.html

I had an audiologist make the impressions. She first inserted some cotton blockers, Then used a syringe device to inject the liquid mold material. It is a 2 part substance like epoxy and sets in just a couple of minutes.

So the helmet does not catch the end of your earbud driver and pull it out? Mine sticks out a bit and gets caught in the helmet...

I do the same thing as Mr Pep.  Try repositioning the speakers in the helmet.  My brother uses the sena ear bud set up and has problems with the wire input for ear buds breaking where it attaches to unit.  He got it replaced with a new one under warranty.

I have read where some people use the do it yourself ear molds with the earphones.  I have never tried this but at the price of the Westgates it might be worth a shot as I think I read that the do it yourself runs abt $30.00 vs. $290 for the Westgates.

these are my daily use buds, very pleased with the sound and fit.
also i have the Etymotic for cold weather, they fit smaller using a Balaclava and are more comfortable under that case.the triple seal is very good at keeping wind noise out and stay in place with the helmet.

I have had a pair for over a yr. You will not be disappointed. They are über comfy and do a GREAT job blocking wind noise. Enjoy!

Got my CR1's today. Music is now crystal clear even at low volume and high speed. But I can no longer hear the bike. I didn't realize how much I use sound to shift. I found myself looking at the tach more. Can't wait to use them on a long trip.

I liked it but it broke after 3 days use.  Short in the wire where you connect your buds.

Here's my setup:

JVC marshmallow buds...did some research, and for under $20 they really kick-ass!  They are the only buds I know of that use soft memory foam , too, but after 8 hours even they start to hurt.

I'm kinda glad they broke - I like the speakers better.
