Ever mount a MP Visual Alert on the dash?
« on: March 04, 2013, 06:50:39 AM »
Trying to mount my radar detector that I am moving from my C10. The mounting location is dependent on where I can mount my Visual Alert. It was easy on the C10, it had a big flat dash.  Not so easy on the C14.

Help! Need to get the initial round of farkling done before the big road trip from here to Austin MotoGP.

Thanks

My Escort passport is on top of the front brake reservoir and the MP visual alert is velcroed on top of the dash. I just used thick cushy Velcro and it still holds well even with the curve. I have a year or so and 10,000 miles with that configuration and not a problem. Will take a picture and post later.

I am very interested in seeing that picture, that would be big help.

My plan at the moment is to permanently mount it on ram air intake under the right inner fairing panel, but I may need to get an extension or a different VA entirely from Mr Parnes.

I mounted it up under my dash on my FZ1 and it read great. It reads through plastic just fine.  It goes off at the same places the one in my car does and has warned me numerous times. The plan is to attach a piece of wood on top of the ram air intake with RTV and wire ties (and string and chewing gum if necessary) then mount velcro to the wood. The detector already has velcro on the bottom from the C10.   Need to figure out a way to weather proof it. On the FZ1, it's in a plastic baggy that has a couple of small holes in it for the wires to pass through.   It's worked for a couple years now.

I moved the Visual Alert to be a little off set from center to give me more slack in the wire when I installed the Horizon ST bars. The Escort is velcroed on the bake reservoir and a 1/4" Velcro strap to help secure it. In bad weather I just remove the unit and put it in the glove box.

Thanks, the picture helps a lot. Question though. On my C10 and my FZ1, I had the LEDs point right at my eyes so that I was immediately aware of the issue. Your MP VA is not pointing at your eyes, how does that work for you?

The angle of my CB Ultra Tour windshield is perfect to reflect the flash right at my line of vision. It acts as a heads up display.

My pic reminds me that my truck is in dire need of a bath ;D

But I think I would notice it well even without the reflection in the windshield. It's still bright and in my peripheral vision.

Even during daylight hours in the various sun conditions?

Yes, I know I am a pest. But I have a very fast motorcycle and a complete aversion to funding small town law enforcement!

+1  Me too!

I don't ride at night a lot so 98% of my riding is during the day and I have ridden this configuration in all daylight conditions. It is almost impossible to miss an alert.

All that said, I know Marc will change the angle of the LED's to your specification. I thought about carefully sanding the bottom to do just that as well as put a slight curve to match the dash. But I just mounted it first and it works so well I haven't bothered to "fix" it.
