I live in California and commute 45 miles each way on the freeway by C10.
Depending on traffic I will split lanes 1-5 miles in each direction every day.
Splitting lanes is like every other form of riding, you give it your full attention.
The CHP has released guidleines for splitting lanes just this last week.
http://www.chp.ca.gov/programs/lanesplitguide.htmlLots of chatter in the papers and on the news about it. Roughly 50% of drivers
in CA weren't aware that it was legal to split lanes. 80% think it's crazy to
ride a motorcycle in the first place.
Whenever I get behind a commuting motor officer I give up trying to stay with
them. They're nothing short of amazing how well they can handle their bikes
and asses their surroundings.
I am by no means an expert rider and would not presume to present myself as
such but splitting lanes IMHO is no different than riding in the rain, riding twisty
mountain roads etc.. The difference as I see it for the state of Washington is
going to be educating the cagers. If you have egocentric drivers that can't bare the idea
of a bike getting past them and are unaware of the legality then your going to
have trouble.
