Best deal on a shim kit?
« on: January 27, 2013, 06:33:01 PM »
OEM Valve shim kit, whats the best deal?  For example, for my Tokina calipers, the Suzuki kit was a LOT cheaper than the Kawasaki.  Is there some other kit that works in our bikes?  Or anyone know the best deal on the kit?

Thanks!

Shims are shims...Kawasaki shims are not different than Honda or any other shims. Several folks have ordered shim "refill" kits. For me, I tape my shims to a piece of paper with my calculations and take them to the local Honda dealer (whom I don't normally do business with). If in stock, they swap shims with me at n/c and I get the ones they don't have but I need at a very reasonable cost.

I suggest trying to swap if you have the time.

I agree shims are shims, was just thinking some might be cheaper than others.

I really would like to have a kit with 3-5 shims each size so we won't have any down time chasing shims while we're at it =)

From the old forum.........

Same as used on many Honda - and half the price and in 0.001" increments or 0.025mm.

I bought a shim kit from Hotcams but found that their shims are only made in increments of .002" (.05mm) where Kawasaki shims are specified in .001" (.025mm) increments. None of the local dealers had all the shims I need in stock and the Kawasaki shims are $9 in Oz each(how these guys fix bikes with no shims is a mystery to me!).  After some research on the old forum I found that Honda also uses the 9.48mm diameter shims on lots of their bikes and they come in .001" increments. Best part is they are $6 each. So between the Hotcams kit and H & K availability I got what I wanted, but it took 2 weeks to do the job waiting for em to come in.  Here's a list of the Honda part numbers. They only go as large as 2.450mm where the Kawasaki ones go as large as 2.750mm but I don't need any larger that 2.40mm.

I found it SO MUCH easier to do the calcs in thou as that's the incremental size of the shims, just couldn't get my head around the mm to be certain.

Try ebay. There are a number of Hot Cams valve shim kits for Kawi.

My Kawasaki ZRX1200 (Hot cam kit) fits the connie engine, I think I paid around $90 for them, they work 100% perfect.
Dont take my LOW post count as being a new Connie owner, I have been with the "other site" before it imploded........

As previosly noted, the "Hot Cams" kits contain shims in increments that are not conducive to correctly manage the increments you find in the Conni... simply put, I found this when I was swapping shims with my dealer, that had numerous Hot Cam kits, along with previously swapped ones .
If you look closely at those kits, while you may be able to utilize some, you simply cannot gurantee them to have the ones you need.

Hot cams website sucks.....
this was gleaned from Amazon:
Hot Cams 9.48mm Complete Valve Shim Kit HCSHIM02
1.20-3.50mm in .05mm increments with 3 shim in each size.

Likely 3/4 of the shims in the box will never be used.... and you only get 3 each size to boot.

When I swapped last time, i needed more than 3 of one size.
Best avenue is to swap with a local Honda dealer, as those ARE in usable increments.

fyi
even though they are in .05mm increments also, these are a larger main kit of 47 sizes..
Wisco engineering is a few blocks from my house....
replacements come in 5 packs....of each size
here is there listing of sizes....

3rd, mine is coming up on 75,000 miles.  My friend (and a Kawi mechanic) did the first two.

Must be nice to have a friend like that.

But note I didn't say he did it for free or such

But on a side note - no matter who helps me out with my bikes will be reimbursed with something at least no matter how good of a friend they are.
