Whelen LED light question
« on: December 30, 2012, 11:29:09 PM »
So I am toying with the idea of putting a Whelen LED light on the back of my bike.

My questions is for those of you that have already installed them, did you leave them solid or in a flash pattern? I'd be afraid of causing some poor cager to seize at a traffic light, or better yet look like I'm getting ready to perform a traffic stop.

I would like some sort of flash pattern, but not for an extended period of time. I guess that a flasher module could be installed.

I think that you would be better off programming it for steady and attaching one of the brake flasher modules. That way you get the brightness of the LED and by using the flasher module it would stop flashing after a few pulses so as not to induce seizures.

There are many of us that already run these.
I believe this is what you are looking for.
You can get them in blue or yellow.. we use red.
You can get these in 3 led , four led or 6 or more.
You can program them your self to flash a couple of times and stop or many other combinations
You can by two (3 led) and sync them together. I have that on my C14 on each side of my tag.
You can buy 6 led and have them programmed to do simple or complicated  sequences.  I have the 6 led on my KLR.
I have the 3 led on my C10 where the bottom  reflector is on the rear mudflap. It fits perfect there.
They are very bright and waterproof.

I looked at some similar but I think I need a flasher that will time out and go to a steady burn after x amount of flashes. The ones like that I've seen continue the flash pattern as long as voltage is applied to them.

Hi all! New guy here with a '12 C14, but one of the last (and best) mods to my other bike was a product called the Strobinator Jr., www.showbikelights.com. It flashes one of several patterns for a few seconds before going solid, and is super bright. I've had a lot of positive comments on mine.

Waiting for the snow near Detroit to melt to break 100mi on my new (12/19/12)  Kawi,

PC

2012, black; Vic Ray extended/dropped passenger pegs; MCLarry's risers; MC Enterprises full bars; Givi E55NT; SW MOTECH rack & hardware; Admore lighting; still need a pipe...

Yes, it does that too. it will time out and go to a steady burn after x amount of flashes.
I know  it is 3 or 4  flashes and then stays steady on, perfect for a brake light or you can have just plain old  steady on. There are 10 different  flash pattern programs in the 3 led version  and 14 in the 4 led and so on.

If you are just going to use your rear brake light, you can just buy the light module, Ive seen them on amazon for less than $20. If you are wanting to add the LED as well, Depending on what state or country you are in, either amber or red and since most lights wash out in the sun except red, I would stick with that. As far as the LED, Whelen is a good brand but expensive. Extreme Tactical  Dynamics has 3watt generation 3 LEDs that I have outfitted my bike for law encorcement use and they have the best prices I have seen so far. Hope this helps..

I have the Whelen Ion set at three pulses a second but usually let off the brake when a vehicle stops behind me. Also had to tone it down a bit by spraying the lens with a taillight tinting spray. Still gets the job done even with the lens almost black.

I am not sure the legality of using amber, but I think it would be a big mistake since that is generally only used on the rear for turn signals; it wouldn't be sending the best/clearest message to vehicles behind yours :)

Maxtog,
Sorry should have been more specific.. Meant red and amber are the only colors allowed on the rear of a vehicle.. You are right amber would send a mixed signal!
