Tank slapper
« on: December 27, 2012, 07:13:20 PM »
Hi there, new member :), how many of you guys have installed this kit on your C14?? I recently just received them in the mail for my red 09 and read the install instructions and was wondering if any special tricks or if any guys have had previous experience installing these. Was a toss up between these and tech spec. Like to show as much as my paint as possible so thought I'd give these a try first. Thanks.

I have this product on my red 14. Wrong time of year to apply it, needs to be hot outside. Tank Slapper is easy to do business with. I have had a couple of problems you might not have.

I never did get the 3M film on the headlight lens though.

My main problem is I am very hard on the tank slapper film used on the gas tank and sides. My legs would rough up the edges and after a while it looked like bird doo.

Solution? I re ordered  3M film for those pieces. Much, much better. The Tank Slapper works well for the bags and those places my legs don't rub. The kit I ordered first go around had 3M for the mirror covers and lower forks. It has Saved my paint a couple of times. I would use again.

Good luck. Tim

Drove to Escondido Ca and the owner of Tank Slapper installed the full 3M package on my 2011 C14.
Last March the TankSlapper web site has several videos on how to apply the film. They even had a video of the installation on C14 headlight.

+1

I ordered the full kit about a month back. I put a couple of them on in the garage(~50 degress), took a lot of work to get all of the bubbles out. After one small one ended up looking like crap I gave up. Brought the saddle bags in the house, and let them sit in 68-70 degrees for a day or two. Put those on quick and easy shmeezy, no bubble what so ever.

Guess it depends where you live. If your in AZ have at it  :)

I am going to wait for Spring to do the rest, or possibly find a buddy with a heated garage for the bike to sit in for a few days.

I placed this kit on my 2009 about 3 years ago. I could not get the film to lay properly on the headlights so I left them off.
Humidity and warm temperatures are your friend. More humidity and less static cling for dust particles. Wait until summer to place the film. I actually contacted the manufacturer and they do not recommend trying to place the film with a relative humidity below 50%, the higher the better. If you clean your paint, say with Plexus and the humidity is low, airborne dust will be attracted to the paint and remain lodge under your film. When everything is wet, it won't look too bad but as things dry out you will see tiny voids( bubbles). I think this film works great. Mine is scratched after 3 years so I plan on replacing it this summer. I'll use the full 3M kit. Good luck.

If you need help/ installation advice Lucas (that's the guy that answers the phone when you call) was very helpful. You can reach him easily and he will walk you thru any difficult pieces as well as give you a few pointers.   I would do business with him again.

Awesome thanks for the experiences! I will wait until spring and a warm day to have a go at it. If the end result isn't what I hoped for will go with Tech Spec. Oh ya what about those colour magnetic ones I've heard about?? I've heard some good and bad about these.

Also I might add last summer I went to Western KS to visit relatives. I parked the Connie in the Quonset and found the bike covered in dust the next morning. I forgot about the tankslapper and blew it off with compressed air. I managed to blow a panel half way off. I had read the tankslapper can be washed and re applied. So I peeled the panel the rest of the way off, washed and put it back on using a bondo  squeegee. Worked well and as good as new.
