Balancer adjuster won't turn
« on: January 16, 2013, 11:12:08 AM »
I tried to adjust the balancer to get rid of the loud whine, but it won't turn.  I followed the procedure in my Clymer manual...Any ideas?

I can't remember for sure because its been quite a few years but make sure the locking bolt/pinch bolt is all the way loose.  maybe use a screwdriver to open the pinched ends up a little and using a flat screwdriver that fits into the slot really well, try turning it.  if you feel you need more leverage, you can use a 1/4 socket on the hex end of a removable screwdriver bit - that will allow you to put ample pressure to push it tight into the slot and ample leverage to turn it.  You can gently try turning in both directions.

I remember reading some years ago that an owner, while adjusting the balancer, had his screwdriver slip from the slot while the engine was running (as you do) and it wound the shaft hard counterclockwise causing that loud whine.  He had to remove the oil pipe to get straight access to the shaft to back it off and start again.

I think that's what happened.  I bought the bike last November, and the whine was terrible.  I had to change the oil seal (bad leak), so I used the flat-tip bit in a socket and it broke loose.  Made the adjustment per the manual and now all is quiet.  Thanks for the help!!
