Painted lid covers
« on: December 01, 2012, 02:36:16 PM »
I was starting to get a few chips on the front face of the bag lids.  Came up with this idea after seeing a set made for Goldwing owners,
that also have a problem with rocks and other items hitting the front part of the bag. We are getting a warm storm this weekend so I thought
it would be a good time to make a set and see how they look.  I have to saythey are bigger than I thought after I installed them, but if they protect the area so be it. From start to finish was about 3 hours of fun in the garage with the Connie.

Now you've gone and done it....C-H-R-O-M-E add-ons for the Connie. Personally, I think you did a great job with the bags,
and it would be a shame to cover it up, so why not use a clear protectant, so the look you were originally after is still
enjoyed. Here is an example of a clear film protectant, though I'm sure that there's less expensive one's out there..

I'm not knocking your work, as it always appears professional, it's just sometimes less is more. The Connie seems to fall
into this phrase, and she drew me to her as a true beauty without the flash. but this is jmho, and by no means meant to offend..

First off I understand you reply. I am in no ways offened. I can not tell you how many PM's I got from this post telling me the same thing you suggested. Clear film is a way one could go to protect the paint. I looked into this and decided to go this way for a reason. After painting the bags and getting them on the bike, I saw how much they are in the airflow and could be in danger of taking damage . I talked the my PPG rep regarding proper protection for the area in question. He suggested some kind of guard instead of the clear film. Reason being paint overtime may does not adhear to plastic as well as on metal and COULD peel due to tugging on the film during removal from changing out the film due to yellowing and wear. I did not want to take that chance due to I know how much time it takes to paint the bags so I decided to go with the cover. Keep in mind I painted them myself and the job came out good but was no means painted in a controlled area like the OEM painted plastic. The mufflers are chrome as well as the badging on the bike. I did not feel this polished aluminum covers were out of place. I enjoy making items for my bike such as these and when I saw the ones made for Goldwings I made a set for the Connie. I do not add items to the bike just for looks. They have to have a purpose for being there first and look good second.

The color looks very smooth. What did you do for the bags stippling?

Interesting, I like it. Have you seen the company that will take your C-14 case lids, cut them down 6 inches narrower and paint them to match the bike? Anybody try to do this with a C-10's cases? Wonder if they'd do it for a C-10.

What Corbin is doing is making new lids and reusing your mounting rings. You could do that with the C-10 bags. Make new lids. However most want more space not less. But I guess if you like the look and just ride to work and small day trips you may not need that much space to pack items and this may be the way to go. One could get a trunk setup and put it one when needed.
