Suspension settings
« on: September 20, 2012, 12:50:24 PM »
Howdy all! I will be picking up my 2010 Concours after I get home from this work road trip. My question is this: the PO softened every suspension setting to help it sink when he sat on it (much shorter than I am) and I would like to dial it back to factory and/or dial it up for someone my weight. I am 225lb out of the shower. Any advice on a baseline setting and where/how to make the adjustment is appreciated! Other than that, I can't wait to get my hands on it and start posting pics etc!

I'm 'over 200', and have the spring preloads backed most of the way off. Do have a fair bit of rebound dampening dialed in. With the springs set even at the 150 lb rider recommended levels, the bike is brutally harsh on anything but the smoothest roads. I have yet to bottom out travel font or back, with the small spring preloads I run. Maybe mine just happened to get the stoutest springs they had in the parts bin... Who knows?

All that being said, I would add in a few spring clicks to carry a passenger or ride it like a track day.

VERY genenal rule of thumb.

Pre-load or sag should be set at approximately 1/4 of full stroke of suspension (i.e. 4inch full stroke, sag should be 1").

Having a bike with a centerstand makes it the process easier since you can get the load off the wheel.

You may need a extra set of eye balls with ruler to determine the sag by measuring when you are on the bike.

Measure between two places on the bike frame or body and the swing arm before load and after load (meaning you sitting on it).

Set sag 1st, compression/rebound 2nd until you reach your desired settings.

Easy-peasy.

I just bought my 2012 C14.  I have been trying to get the suspension set and I kinda agree with Texrider that this bike is very firm.  After riding a Victory Vision for the last 3 1/2 years I expect it to be different.  I have not checked sag and will do that but in looking a a video of race shock setup I found on the other forum it is plain to me that my setup is pretty stiff.  The video's show the checking of rebound damping by applying pressure (bouncing)on the steering stem area and at the rear.  With the front preload at 16 mm and 13 clicks from the softest on the rear my bike is like pushing on a rock.  Maybe it will break-in.

Mine was a bit stiff brand new seems like it loosened up near 1000 miles.  I adjusted mine then

+1.  Mine was like that as well but it took more than 1k to loosen up.

I'm sure mine has a lot of loosening to do yet also but I did notice a difference, at least it seemed like it loosened up some
