I followed the owners manual instructions. My bike has always used about a quart of oil between 6000 mile changes.  Now at 114,000 miles now. The oil usage seems to be improving since about 105,000 but I have not kept any records. Just seems I am having to top of less often.

I have used Rotella 5w40 Synthetic since the third change. At one point I tried Motul 300V 15W50 but it made no difference.

I only expect to get around 200K miles using my cheap Rotella T6, but thats OK with me

I bought a new 1978 Ford van 300ci six used Mobil 1 every 15,000 mile oil changes,  I put 360,000 miles on it and it still ran great , the body fell off , but the motor was tight.
I now have 7,500 miles on 20w-50 Royal Purple in the C14 and I'm going to send a sample to Blackstone laboratories , it still shifts GREAT, better than when I had Mobil 1 cycle oil in it! 
My supercharged car has over 15,000 miles on it , so I'll change that tomorrow
 I buy the extend change version of Mobil 1 at Walmart.
It's not expensive oil  If you change it every 15,000
