Carbon fiber muffler finish care question
« on: September 16, 2012, 03:40:23 PM »
After doing a search for carbon fiber muffler care, I didn't find much info. Does the carbon fiber on My Area P can require anything other than a coat of wax, or should I put some other product on it? Armor all, or some kind of UV protectant?

That is all I have been using on mine...or Eagle1 Wipe n Shine. It still looks fine, I'm just wondering if that will keep it looking good 6 or 7 years from now.

Given the fact mine don't get hot I would guess any good non abraisive wax would be ok. I'm not an expert on cf by any means (not an expert on cleaning the bike in general  ::) ) so I have no long term experience.  :)

You're probably right. It looks to Me like the clear coat is just a high quality automotive grade clear. I guess time will tell.

Probably if you contact Area P they would tell you if any care is needed and what works best to prolong life, if you do contact them let us know what they say.

I only wipe down my CF Muzzys with a water damp micro fiber towell...  :-\

Akrapovic recommends just wiping it down with a damp cloth.  That's all I use on mine on my Ninja 1000.  To me the key to any cleaning is to clean it every time you get back from a ride.

The resins in some carbon fiber are not resistant to UV so a wax that offers UV protection might be a good idea. Have not heard of this issue for some time (years) so I suspect that UV resistant resins are the norm now. Someone want to ask Aera P?
If it can't be fixed with a hammer you can sure as hell teach it a lesson.

A thin coat of any good quality Automotive wax will keep the finish looking great (just like it says in the instructions).  Even a quick wipe down with Lemon Pledge will do it.  That's actually what we use to clean them prior to packaging.  Area P mufflers do not  have a seperate clear coat like some other manufactures that can peel or "yellow" over time.  Our UV protection is actually incorporated into the resin itself.  We've got mufflers out in the field with over 10 years on them and still look like new.

Speaking of Area P slip-on instructions....can I get a copy of those?  I've got the pipe mounted up fine, but I did not get the instructions when I got the pipe from another forum member....and I like to have the paperwork for all my stuff.
