lower seat or bike
« on: September 14, 2012, 01:01:42 PM »
I think my legs may be a little too short, I'm pretty confident one up, haven't tried two up yet but I think that may be another story Should I lower the bike or the seat?? I don't think I'm gonna be getting into  a lot of real fast twisties and mostly going to be used more for touring with my girlfriend. If I lower the bike, everything goes  down and put risers on the bars,"which I need"  If I lower the seat, the bars come up but I'll have to lower the pegs,  also if a low seat, what is a good one to go with?? How bout some thoughts

thanks

If you lower the bike, you'll also lose ground clearance. not just cornering clearance. I'm a bit on the stout side, and I've fully compressed the suspension a couple of (frightening) times. Part of that is likely bad setup, tho.

If you can find a seat setup, I think many (if not most) would recommend that instead of suspension.

There's a thread on the Sargent Low that a lot of people seem to like (also likely to be in my future)... http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=9410.0... But many of the custom seat makers (most of whom are also reviewed on this forum) can make some adjustments for seat height. Spencer's Mod being one of the favored, low cost options... http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=3185.msg45094#msg45094

There are a few other threads on these, as well.

???

Lower seat...... now some of us can actually RIDE IT without it falling over when we stop (well, often combined with other changes).  It is not really "optional" for those of us with shorter legs.

CRAP........ I meant lower the seat, lowering the bike ruins it. DUH  I am tired and need to go to bed, thinking what I want to say but not typing it.

What others have said lower the seat leave the bike alone if you can. I went with a Corbin I still can't touch the ground unless I shift a bit to one side but it made it a lot better than it was before.
it's better to ask forgiveness than permission..... So I have been told

I like the factory low seat.  Unlike the standard, it's level and doesn't run you into the gas tank.

Corbin makes a low cut??  I couldn't find anything on your website I may have overlooked it. I have never lowered a bike before. I don't even like that idea Lowering the bike throws too many things off I would rather do the seat anyway

Am at a disadvantage about the stock settings... but.... Bought a 08 already with Muzzy links and front tree dropped 3/4", and a Sargent seat.  I am 5'11" 32" inseam and am able to very flat foot.  Have a new set of pr3's and have been to the edge of the tire.  Bikes set up on the firm side.  Only had a couple of times with speed bumps (very large ones) that scraped.  Made a three day 1800m tour of so Fla, 2 up (350lbs mostly me), with gear and never had a problem.  With the tree lowered and the link, the geometry should not be too far from stock.  From comments posted, it may fall into the corners a little faster.  The bike lacks nothing in handling. :chugbeer:

Low gel seat for sale here...

http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=10508.0

That's a nice price on that Kaw low gel seat. That's what I use and I'm very happy with it. It's a firm seat for sure but that's the way I like it. It puts your feet at least an inch closer to the ground plus the texture of the seat cover keeps your butt from sliding around.

They make each seat to order, when you order it tell them you want a deep dish cut and nose job, that's what I did and it lowered it almost 2" compared to stock seat height.

Oh ya, and be sure to get the heated one, very nice in the winter...  :)
